Some of these guns really kick ass. Props to everyone here that owns a gun. I'd love to go hunting or to the range, understand the self defense issue and respect that owning a firearm is a valuable constitutional right.

Two reasons I would never keep a firearm in my house:

  • It's much easier to negotiate a hostile situation when you DON'T have a weapon. While having a gun can protect you, it can also escalate a non-violent criminal situation to a shoot-out. And as great as you think your shot it... probablity is a bitch.
  • If I owned for sport I could understand keeping them locked up real good somewhere but would more than likely prefer them off premise. Especially in a family setting.
I respect the right to own a gun and I think gun owners should at least acknowledge they can understand why someone would prefer not to have a gun in their home. Arguing this point is futile because there is no right and no wrong... only 2 people with different preferences.

Both of those are very interesting choices and I'm bookmarking both. I really need to grab up some new toys and this thread has really whetted my appetite!

In fact, it's everything I can do to sit here and (pretend to?) work instead of saying "Fuck it!" and heading to the range.
 
i don't have any guns... cause i live in the city, and um, don't hear much house raids going on here, but if i was out in the country i'd most likely own.

Curious to know - Of all the people who have guns, do you also know basic self defense? Ever take any classes ect? Cause from what it sounds like, lots of you are saying guns are for safety, but i can't picture you carrying guns everywhere you go. So what if you get jumped/mugged in public (more likly to happen imo) how will you defend yourself then? If most of you DO know self defense, then my apologizes. But it just seems, owning a gun is more for fun/show then safety.

I run a forum in one niche.
The target audience is mostly made up of "nice little old ladies" of retirement age.

Two days ago, one of them posted in the equivalent of the "Shooting the shit" section of my forum a story about how last night some people wandered onto her property.

She fired her rifle "just above their heads" and made them stand still. Called the cops.

When the cops arrived, it turned out that those people were visiting one of her neighboring ranches, and got lost on their stroll.

She proudly told the cops that she isn't buying their story, and that the next time there won't be any "warning shots." She'll "show 'em what a good shot she is."

Citizens without guns are at the mercy of their government. You should read some history... When the raids and marches start and states begin to claim independence from our corrupt government, it's ignorant mother fuckers like you that will be beating on my door begging for protection. When the market crashes and people are looting and stealing anything of value they can get their hands on... you going to beat them back with a stick... or a well worded "I message"? Unplug yourself from the fucking matrix long enough to realize that the world is an incredibly fucked up place right now and anything can happen. You owe it to your country and to yourself to be prepared.

I'm happier without as gun so long as you don't get one... You are a little scary. The message that included cannibalism that you edited out was scarier though...

Oh we aren't allowed guns here except for farmers. I have never fired a gun. Meh, I could take it or leave it though I like to think I would be a fairly good shot haha.

At my family's estate upstate NY we've got a whole arsenal of legally owned weps, and recently had our own private firing range installed at the back of the property. From all the guns we have, my favorite of them all is one we picked up at a gun show last summer after that ban to sell semi-automatic guns expired (and heard it was recently reinstated!).

The first time I heard it fired I had to have it, the first time I saw it fired I KNEW it was the gun for me.
