Monaco

If you want it really laid back with sophisticated financial system then Cayman Isl is the place. It's not easy establishing residence there and they protect their own but its great place. No beggars, Mild warm climate, Tons of cash, low taxes, clean, no crime to speak of and the most beautiful beaches in the world. And if you like to dive 100+ft visibility is normal.

If I had 2MM€ to spend on an apartment.. Monaco. If I just want to do online business for sure I would go to Hong Kong or Singapur, where corporations have no taxation on money made outside the country(!).

For those that would come to spain...

Corp taxes here in Spain are around 28-35%, but our IRS is way way softer, I'm sure they wouldn't jail Al Capone... and you can own a company outside Spain and do business (not in Spain ofc) with no problem.

Ibiza or Mallorca for having fun is great but maybe a bit expensive, and living in Madrid or Barcelona has the same cost as living in any big US city.

But the good part is that our sun and our ladies are free :P

Moving all the time can be traumatic for kids. Better to have one place where they can grow up around the same people.

Don't agree - know a couple dozen it didn't affect. Every situation different.
Don't ignore your kids!

Hong Kong is the most westernized place outside of the the western hemisphere.
You can go weeks without realizing you're in Asia, except all the Chinese...
That sounds stupid, but hard to explain. There are pockets of communities which are predominantly caucasian, and you'll also meet a variety of interesting folks from everywhere. You're also in the center of Asia for further travelling. They even have an SES and Adtech show in Shangai, and a few in HK if interested.

HK has every type of food (mexican sometimes hard to find, but they have that too) No shortage of Thai, French, Italian food and whatever else you can name.
The one downside when I was there - not a lot of concerts with Western acts.
(Although they had the Rolling Stones right after I left - fuck!)

I'd suggest you go to HK for 1-3 weeks for a preview. PM me if you want info.
Why'd I leave? After about 6 years felt like it was time to return. But I'll probably go back at some point.

If you could move abroad with your wife and 2 young kids, where would you move to?

English speaking, no Muslim extremist cuntholes, and nice weather (no snow).

Where?

This is about the best, most established guide out there for American expats (a gazillion countries are profiled) Living Overseas - International Real Estate, Overseas Jobs - Asset Protection - Expatriate Resources - Overseas Retirement - it's a good 10+ years old an a PR 7 for a reason.

I made the plunge a couple of years ago and shuttle back and forth. Sister moved to Singapore then Dubai over the past 2 years. Don't really like the whole muslim country thing (guess we all are a little close-minded :s).

Singapore is cool like others said.

Jim Rogers the investor just moved to Singapore a while ago, perhaps you might be interested in his articles.

Schools like Raffles Junior College, The American school and The United World College on your kid's transcripts can put them well on their way to any of the top Universities in the world that mommy and daddy may choose to pay for years from now!

Cyprus rocks too! Haven't spent much time Northern Cyprus and Nicosia; mostly the southern part. Friend (American) lived there for about 2 years....

Love Malta too (really close to Cyprus as you prop. know) but both those countries are NOT cheap.

Malta & Gozo - Mediterranean Haven

Good luck with your decision.....

Hey, anyone hear from Auckland?!

We'd love to spend some time there as it looks so beautiful. Also, kinda like Rugby so it'd be nice to see some word class play on a regular basis!

Hong Kong is NOT the place to go with a wife and 2 young kids........I grew up out there (so was one of those young kids) and look how I turned out!!

Apparently it is the place where married guys are most likely to leave their wives if they stay there for too long.

As a tax haven it is a great place unless you are American, the US tax laws make you pay money wherever you are.

Cyprus is where I have a second home (the Northern part), it has casinos, "night clubs", lots of beaches, plenty of youngsters for your kids to play with, jetski, boats, great restaurants (all sorts of food......although not so much junk like McD's etc.) an American University fantastic weather (most of the year), but the infrastructure for IT is not that great, but it just sort of works.

I'm hoping not too many people find out about it, otherwise it just becomes expensive, far too commercialized.

This is the view from my pool, I have wifi and hope to find a hammock that can cope with a fat guy like me.

one nay, and I see you almost 3 dozen expats I know in favor of HK (that have kids)

You must have seen your parents naked or something

When I was there, the expat population was roughly;
150k American
200K English
50K Canadian
20K French
15-20K German
Another 20k mix of Belgian, Swiss, and various European countries

And a lot of people from India, Thailand, Philippines

Big city, high tech, good weather, and not a 3rd world country with infrastructure problems. Singapore is one of the few that are similar, but their laws are messed up. You don't want your kids to get caned do ya?

You still have access to good shit unlike Costa Rica or one of those other remote locations. Would be really hard for me to live in a country where it was super hard to get things I consider "regular"

Tell me what you couldn't find and I know someone that can get it :p

BB_wolf, I live in CR and if you are thinking about coming down here seriously, I'll be glad to show you the ropes and guide you through some of the pros and cons.

For all of you saying Australia - the tax rate here is ridiculously high - a flat 30% for ALL businesses, regardless of how much money you make.

I know it's a bit of an aside, but you only get taxed on net profit. I've never paid company tax and have had my own company for over 10 years. All the company profit gets withdrawn at the end of each year as my salary.

Personal income taxes are relatively high too, though I'm pretty sure not as high as Canada's.

If you're considering Canada and want to stay away from the winters look at Vancouver. Montreal is cool as long as you stay in one of the English neighborhoods, otherwise be careful because none of the French people will want to talk to you. Halifax is filled with old people, people who don't really work all that much, and students. It's a beautiful city though.

You can go the smaller city route and move to Victoria on Vancouver Island. Just a short 1.5hr ferry ride away. Place is insane. After travelling the whole world and being away from home for the last 1yr I miss it like a mofo.

If you got the cash buy a few acres on the ocean or move to posh Uplands. Lots of international businessman got houses in uplands on the water.

Keeps you closer to bitch slap NeverBlue if they piss u off.

Damn man, I want all of the above. I need to hurry up and take care of this whole money thing so I can start checking all these awesome looking places out. With a list of a 100 places I'd like to spend a year at a piece... the world feels pretty big.
