costa rica.

I'm actually looking there. Anybody ever go to costa rica for vacation? how is it?

Right now it's narrowed down to:

#1: Cyprus
#2: Belize
#3 Costa Rica

and if all else fails...

Halifax, Nova Scotia
or
Montreal Quebec (or k-beck as the maple syrup junkies call it)

Avoid Canada if you value your sanity. Place is cold, wet and miserable.

So is South Dakota! (Which is why we're moving before the 6 month snow season.)

That darn Turbolapp won't let me crash on her couch in TX each winter, what a snob!

If you're not averse to learning new languages and experiencing different cultures, then I would highly recommend areas in and around the Mediterranean. Someone mentioned Ibiza, Mallorca, etc. and they are great - but you have to deal with living on islands that are pretty much tourist resorts.

If I was going to move away from North America, I'd definitely consider the Greek Islands or Greece proper, Cyprus, Spain, etc. Beautiful weather, no hurricanes, and the amenities of a G20 country to boot.

Just be prepared to deal with a different lifestyle than you are accustomed to having at your beck and call in the USA and you're all set.

Southern Thailand, perhaps Ko Samui, for the win. Near all the other cool islands + an airport which leads direct to Bangkok and flies to basically anywhere in the world cheap. :P

i am in singapore now.. not a muslim country definitely...
a lot of chinese here.. predominantly buddhist.. (many are just carrying the buddhist card. but they dont practice the religion.. if you know what i mean)

I was going to say Singapore. Don't know if it is Muslim (partially or mostly) though, it might be.

I'm kind of liking it where I am right now. Summer is here, the beach bars and clubs are hopping, and the chicks are hot. It would be better if I knew more Spanish but you can sort of get by without it around here.

When I've got some serious coin I'll be looking at getting a few places around the world and a big fuck off boat to travel between them. First off will be a place back in Vancouver and a place in Ibiza and then probably one on the Italian coast or Greek islands. I'll probably also get a place in London. Maybe the Caribbean... or I might just not buy anything and use the millions I would spend on property and a boat to just travel between 5 star resorts living the pampered life.

For all of you saying Australia - the tax rate here is ridiculously high - a flat 30% for ALL businesses, regardless of how much money you make.

Personal income taxes are relatively high too, though I'm pretty sure not as high as Canada's.

If you're considering Canada and want to stay away from the winters look at Vancouver. Montreal is cool as long as you stay in one of the English neighborhoods, otherwise be careful because none of the French people will want to talk to you. Halifax is filled with old people, people who don't really work all that much, and students. It's a beautiful city though.

Get a boat, keep it floating in international waters right around the equator, and pay NO taxes!

Tiger is selling his:

You can get a decent apartment in latin america for say.. 30k. You can do the same in SE asia as well as eastern europe. 3 apartments + legal fees + furniture = 120k (and it could be done for alot less)

Spend your time moving 6 months at a time between your apartments. Kids will grow up speaking 2-3 languages which will open many doors in later life. Experience more culture, see the world, and it will cost nothing, and if your bored... move

Moving all the time can be traumatic for kids. Better to have one place where they can grow up around the same people.

another place is koh samui, thailand
(i'd steer clear of bangkok)
Samui has its own airport, but its such a slow pace

Some other cool spots;
Bali & Boracay

Since you have the family to consider - I'd have to say Hong Kong
Fastest internet connection, cool tech shit, great public transport
Lived there for 5 years - kinda changed after '97 but its good again.
And they have some good international schools for the kiddies
(Note that its all private schools there, but many have US/UK curriculum too)
HK Income tax is like 20%.
And you can have a live in housekeeper for approx $500 a month
Look for something between Kennedy Town and Sheung Wan, or Mid Levels if you can swing it.

Nick, I hope you are on top of the new tax rules for expats.

The last thing I worry about. All my cash right now isn't reported to the IRS to begin with and I have absolutely no intention of paying anything they don't rip out of my hands.

Fuck the idea of us paying for a bunch of camel jockey Iraqis who are too fucking lazy and/or stupid to fix their own country on their own. I simply refuse to finance that shit. I've gone years and 2 audits and they still haven't asked for much more than $2K in additional liabilities.

If it weren't so fucking cold (on the same latitude as my current city, aberdeen) I'd move to Montreal.

Perhaps when they are younger, but i've met some people who lived lives like that and by the time they were in their mid-20's spoke 5 languages, and had seen alot of shit.

Some families live on boats and sail the world with kids, educating them onboard.

And if you have all the apartments set up as 'homes' with all the shit you need, it cant be too traumatic, except for leaving their friends, but kids forget that shit pretty fast...
