anyone live in a small town?

now i graduated, and i'm back at home. just to give you an example, i went out to the bar last nite, a pretty popular bar for around here, i would say i knew 80% of the people that were there. all ppl from high school that do the same thing every weekend, and hang out with the same people that they knew since they were in kindergarten.

and i've just come to the conclusion that its retarded that these ppl don't escape there comfort zone ever, and also that i feel like i'm going backwards in life by hanging out with them.

this is the exact reason why I set my own personal rule of never ever moving back to somewhere I once lived before. There's just way too many cool places in the world to stick to one, or go back to your hometown

I grew up in similar circumstances ~25K people. There are definitely some "townies" still around when I go back there. But there's no need to be a snob or look down on them.

True... they're not willing to leave their comfort zone... but you know what? They're probably happy doing all the shit you just described. Might I even be bold enough to suggest that they're happier than you?

As the saying goes: ignorance is bliss.

Agreed. There's a fine line between wanting to succeed, being driven to succeed, and going over the line, not being happy with yourself, etc...

I have always been driven to succeed, and when business is going good, it's great. Other times it's extremely stressful. I look at people in these small towns (I'm from one myself), they have their 15-year old car they bought used 10-years ago, a $150,000 house, their family, friends, and that's about it. And they are very content & happy with their lives. A lot of times I wish I could do the same, just settle down and relax....not in my blood I suppose.

this happens in every town, in every city, everywhere in America.

90% of people are doomed to lead mundane, boring lives.

I live beside the tiny Civil War town of Gettysburg in an even smaller town and I love it. It is quiet, laid back and stress free. I am big on family, so it is not a big deal to have tons of things to do like a city offers.

Cost of living is cheap and everyone is friendly as hell, so I really couldn't ask for anything else. I have a 2500 newer square foot house on an acre that cost $250K, a minivan and a pool, and I am happy as hell. Just some people have different tastes in what makes them happy I guess.

Oh, and I hate going to the city. The traffic, the people, it just drives me nuts. Probably doesn't help that I mostly visit Philly and Baltimore because of my brother-in-law, but they still have rubbed me the wrong way on cities in general.

it might just be the people i hang out w/ .. my biggest pet peeve is just that everyone in my town knows everything about my life so far and its just weird ... i can't do anything without everyone knowing about it .. its a PITA

I lived in a small town. I feel ya. You clearly outgrew the place and def need to move somewhere else. Since you just came back, what's really stopping you? Pack your shit, and head somewhere else.

well i'm starting my job in the end of august so i can't move. its a consulting job so i'll travel every week, but i'll be based here. i'm gunna see how things go and if i can eventually move somewhere else...

i had an interview in NYC right after i accepted this job and that would have been sweet living there, but i declined b/c the pay wasn't great and it would have been an entry level search marketing job which i would have hated probably

I live in a town of about 30k...The fun thing to do for a lot of people in the summer is to go out to karma or bamboo and go fist pumping...(jersey shore- fml)

I go to a decent sized school, about 30k kids...it was kinda neat living there...it was in north jersey though (the shithole of shitholes besides NY itself)...So I was very glad to leave and go home almost every weekend to come back home, it's a lot more fun here...

But also where I live there is a lot someone can do...there's a little bit of everything for everyone...boating, woods, mountains, etc...nothing is THAT far away...so coming home is really nice, plus I like living in a nice community where I can leave the keys in the ignition of my car with the windows open and know it will still be there in the morning...

ps....3-4 friends you will have for life > 300-400 friends you will have for a few weeks...

Hell yeah bro. I live in Lebanon just northeast of you. I live in a small older development (1950's) in the middle of the amish country. It smells like shit but beats dealing with the trash around here.

So if I get this thread straight, what we have here is the village nerd going off to college to get educated, returning home, and finding out he's still a beta male and that his fancy degree won't get him laid with the chicks he lusted after in high school. So, now he wants to go to the big city hoping it'll be different.

Have fun. The second I'm done in Vancouver I'm heading back to a small town to be a Doctor, drive my boat and truck, and live on a farm. Shit maybe I'll coach the high school football team to boot.

Quit your crying
You're awesome tangy.

I don't buy that. More people are becoming self employed entrepreneurs, learning other languages, traveling, etc. It's a fringe phenomenon at this point, and it might take 20 years to go mainstream, but it is far from being a curse (doomed).

Except imagine that being driven by some 12 year old girl down the gravel road at 35MPH. (Dexter, Michigan where I lived for a while seemed like the definition of northern hick town)

Dude, you and me could be long-lost brothers, or at least I probably know you in person. I grew up in Chelsea, MI, lived there for 18 years, which as I'm sure you know is like 5m from Dexter.

The crazy thing is that, growing up in that area, I was 100% sure that nobody within 50 miles even knew how to turn on a computer. The fact that you and me are both so technically inclined really makes me suspect some sort of hickish in-bred relation. Shit, our moms might have nailed the same postman, who knows?

Most of the girls that were "hot" in my highschool are now fat, ugly, and have about 2 kids each. I would have to imagine it's the same everywhere. It's so funny how much time changes things. There was this one girl I used to have a crush on, but was always scared to talk to her. Now I wouldn't touch her with a 10 foot pole.

Amish country is awesome. Nice and peaceful. I go to Lancaster a lot, mostly for the outlets and my attorney's office is there as well. Gotta love passing a horse and buggy and trying not to run over shit in the road.

LOL it is, there was a huge thread on another forum (e46fanatics i think?) dedicated to the subject with a bunch of before/after pics. It was a shame.

Packed up my car and moved from Orange County, California to Omaha over a decade ago. Was quite the transition. Learning experience. Highly recommend it.

I miss some things about Cali and I do not miss other things. Oddly enough, I like the weather in the midwest better than the weather in So Cal.
