Anyone recently made the move from a Mac to a PC?

I want try building a PC from newegg.. just because I heard about it a lot on all the forums..

Is it intuitive, on the site itself, or is there anything I can read up to get the best build...?

is it like the Dell customization?? or you order the parts and assemble urself.. Like the assembled PCs of the late 90s?

Anyway I am trying it tonite..

Yeah it's piece by piece not like dell customization lol. When you think you've found good parts go here: Tom's Hardware: Hardware News, Tests and Reviews and ask the dudes if your shit is good.

there is no perfect build. If it has an I7 quadcore basically it will be fast as shit no matter what. Just make sure parts are compatible usually they say in the specs what they'll work with.

uhhwhat?
it seems to me like everyone else here has opinions on why one closed platform is better than another, and you seem to want to keep using closed software, too, so if linux is for some reason is not an option, then you should ask them, this is /thread for me.

Linux is like rain man. Sure he can do math calculations faster than anybody but he's socially awkward and no one likes him unless he's doing giant math calculations for them. Face it, Linux sucks as a Desktop platform and is atleast 5-10 years behind everyone else for app support and ease of use.

If you want to kill productivity use Linux, you'll be tweakin' your configs, and installing libraries all day.

I think I just heard Lee's death scream from here

Exactly I tried installing Ubuntu Linux distro on my laptop and it was a pain with the install and then everything needs some libraries to be downloaded.

I would rather stick with Windows 7 personally as it just gets my work done with ease.

Yeah Linux is not for everyone. if grandma asked me what to get, it wouldn't be linux, it'd be windows. Just like if she asked for advice on transportation, I'd advise a taurus over a speed bike. There's a learning curve.

I love how all the Windows users still think that OSX is just for "Video and Graphics"...although most developers(and anyone that wants to be more efficient) have switched to mac...oh...and google!...the biggest company in the world...but what do they know?

err.. what?

Google has told their staff to use Linux OR Mac.

And most developers have switched to Mac? You are delirious.

Do you really think Google is the biggest company in the world? There are so many mistakes in your post it's awesome

Isn't using Windows or a Mac not really counterproductive. I heard like that shit crashes every ten minutes man.

As a former computer tech, during the prime of Win XP I must say that win 7 is the best MS has come out with yet. Been using win7 since october and the only problems i've had so far are from hardware issues (this is a homegrown machine from early 2007; hard drive/vid cards/fans met their expected lifetimes)

about a month ago my vid card failed and would take windows with it, blue screen everytime.(OSX would throw a similar error if the vid card failed) anywho... with the amount of restarts that i did on this thing to see if i could some how configure it to run with the glitch, XP's and Vista's registries would be completely toast and i would be typing this on a reinstall.

when i finally got the new vid card, 7 came right back up informed me of the error and went along its merry way.

no memory/processing issues to report with 2 browsers and photoshop open (2GB ram, 1.86GHz proc OC'ed to 2.86GHz) and just breaking 1GB of ram usage.

if you get a mac, you're going to get great support. that's why when macs do have problems they generally are taken care of in-store(or the person that had the problem is a fanboi and never tells his friends that his mac has a problem).

I'm told that if you want slightly better support with Dell/HP buy a small/ medium business workstation

just posting my 2 cents to represent win7... w0rd

Win7 is THE best windows that has ever been released. Fucking thing is flawless top to bottom.

This. Best version out MS ever released, in terms of usage, hardware support, error handling. I love it.

This coming from the guy who couldn't stand Vista so switched to Ubuntu for about a year. Loved Linux, just love my PC games a little more, and that's really the deal breaker. If only I could get windows games under Ubuntu, I'd have a joygasm.

I even brought a few programs over from when I used Linux, like Pidgen, VLC, Open Office, and NetBeans.

God, open office is a train wreck. Why not just pirate MS Office?

Guys, it's just a computer. As long as you can go on the interwebz none of that extra 0.001 second increase in performance matters...

I can see people using macs for print designs though for bigger magazines/agencies for the true color too (web designers still design for pc users for the most part).

It's hard for a mac user to switch to PC, you'll hate the colors... :)

Uh, wut? Macs use Nvidia cards and their monitors most often have an LG panel in them... so the colours are the same as those on a PC running a similar setup. Adobe RGB or sRGB space is the same on any platform using similar hardware.

Windows 7 = Rock solid. I bought my PC in January of this year, it hasn't crashed once.

Get a mac if you have kids whose brains aren't fully developed yet, the big buttons should be easier to navigate. As a bonus, if they spill juice and food on it it won't matter because if you're a good parent you'll be switching to a PC when they reach 3 years of age.
