Are you a marketer or a straight up liar?

People want something for nothing and its a marketers job to give them nothing for something.

lol +1

most people know what they're buying is bullshit and they're just buying that tiny sliver of hope that it'll actually work, when in reality they're just lying to themselves and they already know it won't. like when i pay to get into a club thinking i'm actually gonna get girls

I grind pretty hard to add and create value. It isn't as flashy as what other people do, but at the end of the day, I have something to build on for tomorrow.

DFB is a great example of a legit product that is being marketed to the audience who needs it.

Is it fucked up that we are all spamming random forums? yes.

However, that's not my point. I'm talking about the way guerilla markets DFB to us--the WF community. He didn't make some piece of shit software and tricked us into buying it. Rather, he built a solid tool and demonstrated to value to us. That's what I call solid marketing.

Same goes for Joe with BLG, the guys that made SEscout, mattseh with his Megapinger, etc.

On the other hand, we often get some rotten apples in the BST who will hype up their writing services or new linking package, get a few orders and take off with the money. That is what I call SCAMMING, DECEIT, and PIECE OF SHIT SELLING.

Pretty much, everything being sold in the BST here is unethical in some way or form. However, some are legit and others are scammy. Does this make sense? I'm pretty sure this type of comparison is what the OP was talking about.

All marketing is lying. Ever seen a Mc Donalds commercial? My Big Mac doesn't look like that when I get it. Axe body spray? I tried it, and the only thing it attracted was insects. Mad tight parties don't break out when I drink Sprite. My Nike's don't make me a gold medal winning track star. Drinking beer doesn't make super models swarm.

From what I've seen the insane volume offers are always the misleading ones, acai, those free grant offers, whatever...
Point is, it's easier to make a shitload by promoting offers that are made to extract money from people.

Money corrupts. Look at the current monetary system, it's a scam too.

I've made my monies with money extraction offers, now shifting to building value.
It's not all bad if you can use what you made to give back and build something of value (that you will also make money with of course).

And anyway, the whole world is a scam, not an excuse, but it's true.

You could think of it as education...
I was in premium SMS previously and the saying was "If you believe a website will tell you who your true love is you deserve to be ripped off" By taking $20 from you we educate your dumb ass so hopefully next time you will think, which might prevent you from being scammed for $2000 or even $20 000.

So yeah, I'm in the education business :) (Educating dumb fucks)

Lol that reminds me of how my cousin bought an iPhone 4 and then asked me why she couldn't connect to 4G. I had to tell her the 4G stood for 4th generation and it was actually a 3G phone. someone got hustled

AT&T also blatantly lies in their commercials, saying they're the only network that lets you talk and browse the internet at the same time. I tried it on my buddy's Sprint phone and it worked just fine.

Kroger puts unhealthy food in their healthy food aisle and the majority of people don't check the labels and end up buying it just because it says "organic" and because Kroger tells them it's healthy.

The majority of large companies have horrible customer service on purpose in the hopes that if you call them expecting them to refund your money or answer your questions, they can keep you on hold so long that you just give up and let yourself get ripped off.

All of these are examples of pure deceit, and all of these companies are ballin outta control. I think it's simply a question of how much you value your own money in relation to other peoples'. Personally, I believe that most people who pay for ringtones and buy diet pills are probably the kinds of people who will blow their money anyway regardless of whether they're blowing it on my shit or someone else's, so it really doesn't bother me.

They also have big legal departments that tell them what they can get away with. I try to stay honest so that I don't get a notice from the AG.

People love to buy shit they think will give them an edge. Rank your site at number one, lose weight, bigger penis, look years younger. They've basically pre-sold themselves by the time they get to me.

What's more deceptive, modern large scale bottled water marketing or CPA rebills?

That's probably the biggest deception is history, although chicken or penguin shit sold as valuable garden fertiliser certainly offers a good ROI, too.

There is a BIG difference between marketing and lying. Marketing is displaying the benefits to a buyer, how can this help you to help me, finding a problem and pointing to the solution. Lying is those bogus as guru stories and weight loss jokes that is being sold. Now affiliates lie to when the go down that type of marketing path like with flogs and farticles.

This is a great topic to pose the question, "How does a defense attorney sleep at night?" In short, a good defense attorney leaves the judging to the courts and simply upholds his/her oath to provide a zealous and lawful defense. In this case the "court" is the target audience. At some point your conduct as a marketer will be "judged" and you will either be rewarded with success or punished with failure!

Quality earns loyalty

I do hope so, successful long term business as built on trust, sure you can 'churn' customers with clever techniques and they will buy - once - but what a waste. All that effort to get a bad relationship and a rotten reputaion. Scamming is a never ending treadmill, there is nothing wrong with clever marketing techniques so long as in the end you deliver value. Thats the way to build a real business.

Morals and ethics are subjective my friend. For you cheating on your girl / fucking hookers may be immoral -- but for me it may not be. And there is no way to judge the right and wrong here - except through your view of the world.

So focus on your own shit -- do what is right for you and stop trying to judge/preach others.

I like to take the position of the humble marketer. Why? I think a lot of people are smart enough to tell when you're pulling their leg. If you have something good, you shouldn't have to exaggerate the benefits by saying things like, "This Product will JUMP START Your Marketing Career GUARANTEED!!!" For some people, you're product will be worthwhile, but for others it will be a waste of money. I try to make this point clear when I'm in marketing mode. I don't like it when people try to sell things to me, so I try not to "sell" my products to others - it naturally comes when you've built up a relationship with them through your blog or whatever and when they feel that you're honest by telliing them the good, bad, and ugly about what it is you're selling.

I did not create this thread to be preachy. I thought it was an interesting subject and this is a marketing forum and we all rub elbows with each other and this place isn't exactly white hat central.

So I thought this would be a good discussion thread. One thing I noticed is a lot of people are getting defensive about the questions.

And with the news of the FTC crack down the FTC seems to of made it clear whats morally not right and im pretty positive that most of us are in violation of one or more of the rules they made clear over the past week.

I am not trying to preach that I am as white hat as you can be, because I'm not. Just interested in hearing everyones thoughts on the subject.

Also another thing, A lot of people are bending towards the issue of "your morals are different than mine so im not in the wrong because I don't think I am".

Do you think that argument would hold up in court?

Even I know some of the shit I've done in the past was crossing the moral line, but I didn't try to lie to myself and say that it was ok because people are stupid and should read the terms.

I'm curious on how some people can justify what they are doing by simply saying their morals are different.

And of course if you think this thread is a joke, dumb or starting to make you feel bad about what you do then just leave. You don't have to post stupid shit about how cool you are that you don't care, because nobody else cares that you don't care.
