Raw pork is always a bad idea. All kinds of nasty can come from that. That being said, I know a couple people that feed their dogs a raw diet and they are fantastically healthy dogs. It's far from the WORST idea. It's not an undertaking to be taken lightly though and it's not for lazy people.
The idea with a raw diet isn't to feed them whatever dated scraps you can pick up at the meat counter for cheap, it's about getting fresh cuts from the butcher. Mostly chicken backs and that sort of thing. The size of the dog, determines what prep you should do with it. A Lab or other fairly big breed can chomp through a chicken back like it was nothing and suffer no ill effects whatsoever. Give that to a small breed and it might pose a choking or blockage hazard and so you want to grind that meat and bone (same goes for cats, and you need to augment with Taurine). The smaller raw chicken bones are not a problem for dogs to digest. Never ever give them a cooked bone. They splinter into sharp pieces and pose all kind of problems.
Beyond that you vary the diet with fresh fish, veg and fruits, nuts and vitamins.
Fresh raw poultry, fish and beef poses little health hazard to your animals and even less to you. Unless you're vegetarian I'll guess you handle and cook raw meat fairly regularly. Parasites can be an issue whether you feed your animals raw meat or otherwise, but you should be deworming your animals either way. They can pick up parasites from all over the place. Dogs should be given heartworm tablets as well if that's prevalent where you live. It comes from mosquitoes.
I'd be game to try a raw diet for both the dog and cat but I fall well into the lazy category. We feed them premium wet and dry foods. The majority of the dog's diet is made up of Orijen kibble from Alberta, Canada. I highly recommend it. It's grains, corn and rice free. Remember, ingredients are always listed in the order in which they appear in greatest quantities. If the food you're feeding your animals has grains, corn or rice listed among the first ingredients (if at all really) then it's crap.
