Well your lucky, but where I am at people still have gun racks in their back windows of their cars and the cops are crooked as shit. Just depends on the area you are from and how strict the cops are. You drive a city over and the cops are dicks.

Word of advice.
#1 - get that felony expunged, or otherwise ask for your right to own firearms back (Yes, this can be done, but it is expensive).
#2 - Get rid of the glock & buy a cap & ball BP revolver. These are legal for you as a felon to own, and will provide more than enough personal protection.

It's in the car because I carry it for the walk to the garage form the house which has a wooded area on either side of the walk. Our garage isn't attached to the house. I also had it in case I got stuck in the snow and had to walk back home on the dirt road at night.

It doesn't really make sense to me to even possibly put my life in danger because of a law that says I can't carry a gun. The same way it never made sense to me that I wouldn't smoke weed because there was some "law" made up by some group of worthless fucks for an idiotic reason that says I wasn't allowed to. If I want to smoke weed, I am going to smoke weed. I'm not a slave and I have no master.
I don't really respect many laws because I don't respect the people who create them. The same way I wouldn't listen to my plumber if he told me I am no longer allowed to use the word "fuck". A plumber telling me I'm not allowed to do something has about as much weight as a politician telling me I'm not allowed to do something. With the exception of the IRS, I have always pretty much done exactly what I want.
Speed limit is 50mph? I'll go 50mph if that's what feels safe to me. But if 80mph feels safe, then that's what I'm going to do. I'm not going to do 150mph because I wouldn't feel safe doing it.

Ok, then realistically, wtf are you going to do with a hand gun during a cougar attack? If a cougar decides to attack you (unlikely), you're probably not even going to know it until he's on top of you.

As mentioned above, get some bear scare, or even pepper spray would be better than a gun. That way you just need to aim in the general direction to affect him.

Something I learned when I went to Africa - you're FAR more likely to be attacked by bison / buffalo / cows etc than predators like cats/wolves/bears. They're pretty fucking nasty too if they decide they want to have a crack at you. A swift kick with some steel-toecapped boots will make a cat reconsider, whereas an angry bull won't even notice.
So makes sure whatever you carry is suitable for dealing with that, if they're in your area.
