FDA slapping new warning labels on Cigarettes in the US

Yes, people that hate your freedoms and plot to take it away love to say that the Fore Fathers didn't really mean for you to be free. And then when that doesn't work they say "well they never would have guessed about the internet or nukes." so which is it liberals? stand on some principle or GTFU.

the Constitution is all about restraints on power. the people that call people with reading comprehension skills "original intent" types are the same people that want to do away with the constitution so that they can shove everything the federal government wants to do to you down your throat.

inalienable rights don't evolve.

if anything, technology and "social concerns" should make us even more vigilant about these restraints.

 “ In questions of power, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution.” Thomas Jefferson

The province actually profited almost $300 million from smokers regardless of their health treatment costs.

well as long as the state, which produces nothing, profited, justice was served.

and if they are paying 2x what they cost the system, why are you for this robbery and want to extend it to other choices people make?

if someone has $10 dollars and takes it in a store and a pack of smokes costs $10...with $8 going to the government...now you've taken that $8 out of the productive economy and into the hands of the state.

so who gets fucked? how about for starters everyone else trying to sell NON poisonous products in that same store! not to mention that poor serf who has less purchasing power because of the all knowing government has him walking around like a marionette.

everytime i go to Canada i hear these liberals talk about the almighty state. my friend thinks its great that they close down liquor stores in poor areas earlier than they do in more affluent areas because they don't want people drinking away their sorrows in the down economy. my friend could only see the good intentions.

the reality? the poor get fucked AGAIN by the state. they drive further to get beer because they can't afford to live where the state will let you be an adult. they drive drunk and spend more gas to get there. fuck the nanny state.

People should be smart enough to either not smoke or quit smoking for themselves and/or families. Who would want to cut their life in half for a shitty 4 minute nicotine buzz.

Apparently people aren't smart enough, which is why we have so many non-profits advertising against cigarettes.

If the FDA can't do their job, then wtf is the point of the FDA? For those that don't know what FDA stands for: Food and Drug Administration

Anything that the government does to help reduce cigarette consumption is a plus.
Fuck cigarettes.

We have non-profits trying to get alcohol banned, too. MADD, neo-prohibitionists, etc. There are non-profits trying to keep weed banned. Just because a non-profit exists for a cause doesn't make it a good cause. People aren't smart enough to put their expensive cars in the garage when they pissed off a neighbor either, what's your point bro?

In case you aren't outraged enough, these new graphic ads are supposed to take up half the cigarette carton on both sides. Obviously this isn't going through without a fight from big tobacco.

Most of the kids I know realize the risks of smoking. They're not dumb. They're just expressing their self-interest. They value the gratification of the cigarette more than its long-term impact on their health.

The same is true when a diabetic eats ice cream or cupcakes.

The same is true when a fat person orders a large pizza and chicken wings for himself.

It's self-interest. I do the same when I hand over my $2.15, and pour Starbucks coffee down my gullet each morning. Drinking that battery acid can't be healthy, but it's worth it to me for the jolt.

Each of us makes decisions that accommodate our self-interest. So do smokers. They don't need ads to tell them what they already know.

In this case, most people can agree that government taking action in reducing cigarette smoking, which kills hundreds of thousands annually, is a good cause.
You can't compare apples to oranges.
And yea I definitely should have been smart enough to expect a random car trashing on a Monday night. Great analogy.

Australia has this already, we're also hopefully moving to plain packaging in the near future. Does it make a difference? Honestly it's hard to say, it's unlikely to make a difference to those already smoking but in my opinion it does help with youngsters who don't already smoke.

I'm sure this idea will get slammed on WF, but if it makes any tangible difference to preventing somebody from smoking in the future then it's a job well done.
If tobaco companies are pissed of enough to run an adertising campaign against the givernment it means they expect it to work. If it didn't make a difference tobaco companies wouldn't care.
And I agree with you, it will probably not do much for those already smoking, but it should help with young people not already smoking.
