Congrats, you are another mindless lemming. Linux is shit for desktop use. Great for servers. Hope you dont like playing the latest games.

"But I can just boot into windows to play a game" - yeah, you do that.

Actually I do that just fine, I changed things up a bit with dual-boot so if I want to play games I just said fuck using linux and use windows if I want to work I say fuck windows and use linux.

It works just fine.

But I may very well go back and install vista as my main OS and use linux in a virtual pc setup.

I'm thinking about this more as I play with it, simply put I'm fighting to find that perfect balance between my personal use and my work use.

I think I need to buy another computer one strictly for work and one strictly for personal haha.

Fuck I'm too picky and change my mind too much with this shit already, gotta just pick one and go with it.

Get a second PC and a KVM.

Yup, that is my setup. Main uber rig for work and gaming, and a slightly older less powerful box for email and music. Each has their own monitor, 24 and 21 inch respectively. I have an Avocent two channel digital KVM switch between them.

Why Vista Aequitas?

I have a 19" and a 20" on one, and a 20" on the other.

Dual systems are not the same as dual display, and I found when I went dual display, there was no going back.

I use xp as my main OS and ubuntu on vmware. I like linux as desktop but I still xp a lot more. I hate Vista in general and I am skipping updating until windows 7. I've used the betas and they have been a lot better than vista even though the visual look is almost identical.

Why Vista Aequitas?

I honestly swear I must be running just the absolute perfect hardware with a rarely good version of Vista or some shit because I've never had a single issue with it.

Actually thats a lie the only real issues I ever had with vista is making it slow (My own stupidy and fault though), I can't connect to windows live (Ever lol), and it was a bit tough to get WAMP to work but after this new install of Vista it works perfect first time around so my old install must have been fucked. (Which I know I fucked it a bit).

Other then that Its ran just as great as XP has for me in the past.

Its strange because you talk to everyone else and it gives them headaches like crazy, a friend of mine can't do shit on vista because he tell's me nothing will install, he gets errors out the ass, his drivers are installed one day and gone the next.

I've never had any major issues as the ones I hear from others who hate vista with a passion lol.

I don't have time for games but I'm coming up on a year with Ubuntu. Installed it as dual boot with Vista because Vista blows so bad. Haven't booted windows in 5 or 6 months. Haven't reinstalled, or had a virus or rebooted in a similar amount of time. Coincidence ?

I have an XP box running right now that hasn't been rebooted in 9 months. And as for viruses? I think I've had one in 14 years of owning computers.

Wow what a discussion, always the same flaming about operating systems. As long as you can do your fucking make money campaigns I don't care what runs under my skin. I experienced crashes with windows and macosx. I am fine with windows as it does what I need it to do. Its pretty stable, even vista is, as long as you know what you do ;-) Even better if you know which hardware components fit together...

It's nothing that you have or are doing. Any that has actually used Vista would agree with you.

Can we get more of those sexy chicks pimping out the hardcore nerd fetishism?
I mean, I KNOW women that attractive would never go near someone that can explain what the fuck Ubuntu actually is, so Harvey needz moar phantasee!

Back to flaming!

Tweak: Gonna disagree with you there.
Vista, now that they actually got around to fixing it nearly 18 months after it's proper release, is a good operating system, but only if you're running a rather high end machine. i.e. more than 2 core, more than 4gb of RAM. And the only reason for that is because XP doesn't utilize this stuff to its maximum potential (for instance, only one of my cores sees any use at all during the boot up sequence after Windows loads in XP, where as it bothers to use 2 in Vista). Top end hardware just can't be done justice without Vista (except sound cards, which, frankly, haven't gotten much better in the last 6-7 years on a strictly consumer level)
And it looks so pretty!

That said, there are so many things in it that are just such a massive pain in the arse. And I'm not talking about the stupid warnings that pop up every time you click on anything. I'm talking things like relative, absolute, and redirected directory structres. Like the fact that they're still using a registry wasn't bad enough, now there are files that are being laid down just so that the OS can find shit that should have been installed in a specific directory by default!?

Also, it's a pain in the arse to flash it to multiple computers from a clean install disc unless the computer s have the exact same hardware spec.
Found that one out the hardway, trying to to thinstall at a mates place. The bruise on my shoulder wasn't cool.

No shit Quake 3 is 10 years old. Nobody said COD5 will run fast on Linux. It might not even run at all. That's why I recommended that if you game, you probably shouldn't use Linux as your primary OS.

Gimp does suck, depending on what you use it for. If you're a designer or graphic artist, Photoshop is indispensable. But for regular use, which is what 99% of us are using these apps for, Gimp or Gimpshop work perfectly fine. There's absolutely nothing you learn in basic photoshop courses that you can't easily do in Gimp, provided you actually take the time to learn it.

If I had a choice, would I go with Photoshop? Of course. But I'm not going to use a broken OS just for Photoshop. That's idiotic.

You say you've been using Linux for 10 years but then claim that the command line or wine are 'hard.' Obviously having Linux installed on your server for 10 years doesn't deem you a power user.

Using wine is no harder than "wine app.exe" and nearly every command line app is as easy as using a GUI app, provided you actually look at the manpage/cheat sheet/what-have-you. Reading is usually too complicated for Windows users, right?

I can burn an ISO like this: "burn file.iso". The burn script might of taken an hour to learn and write, but this saves me countless time. Now imagine having such scripts for nearly every task you do. Time is money.

I was only making a point between Windows and Linux, but OS X is the best OS currently available for most users. It's basically Linux with a _very_ fast UI (unlike Xorg), a million intuitive features (like being able to connect computers together without using a crossover cable), and a sleek design. And, you can run Office and Photoshop natively. People forget that OS X is not OS 9, which is what people associate as sucking ass (and it did).

If you play games then you're pretty much tied to Windows, so I'm not sure if there's even an argument there. If I still played games I would most likely get a second box and KVM (as stated in the thread) or switch to Windows full time.

I use Linux because I'm just more efficient on it. I know numerous technologies and having full control of my OS, yes, I am 'edgy.' I feel limited as fuck on Windows, and the only time I ever booted up a Windows box in the past 6-8 years was to give that Steam LSD+F Zero X game a try.

I know people who've switched from Windows to OS X, from Windows to Linux, and from OS X or Linux back to Windows. Obviously if you can't get shit done in Linux you shouldn't be using it, but I don't mind learning new things. It's like saying Vim sucks: How can anybody who doesn't know how to use it possibly like it?

and for the record, most wireless cards and nearly every recent piece of hardware works flawlessly in ubuntu and other major distros.

As a linux user for over a decade, i know what the fuck i'm talking about. Why would you bring up vista when nobody uses vista? We use XP, a relatively stable OS that gets the job done and is compatable with pretty much every piece of hardware out there. When you can't even get linux to work with extremely popular wireless internet cards, there's a problem. Quale 3 was released NINE FUCKING YEARS AGO you retard. Go show me some ubuntu benchmarks for cod5.. Meanwhile i'll be actually playing it.

Gimp blows, and it simply cannot compete with photoshop like you say. Also, if you want to run it on linux (requiring a tedious workaround, in fact there are lengthy tutorials on how to do it) it doesn't run close to as well as in xp on the same hardware.

For you, you have to learn shit like how to use wine, and how to use command line to use your computer, while for me, I can sit down and just use shit, and it works properly the first time. And I don't have to worry about letting my girl do stuff cause she knows how to use windows, etc.
You, on the other hand, force yourself to use an inferior OS for the sake of thinking you're somehow edgy. Might as well grow a neckbeard and get some birkenstocks and start listening to dave matthews band, buy an ipod and a macbook pro. If you're going to be a retarded fanboi, might as well make it for a product that people recognize and actually has enough market share to matter.

Meh Ubuntu...

Real chicks use Macs.
