Leaked internal memo from HP outlining their strengths and weaknesses

I buy gadgets for utility. Something the size of the iPad is an odd form factor. It's too large to keep in your pocket which means you have to have a *reason* to carry it around with you.

Carry it to work? No, I have a real computer there. Unless you walk around a lot at work and need to read your e-mail and browse the web without typing more than seven words at a time, your iPad is useless.

Carry it to school? No, I need something I can type my notes into. Typing on an iPad is *worse* than typing on an iPhone from what I've read.

Carry it when I'm out and about in the city? No, I'd have to have a man purse or a backpack because the iPad is just too bulky to hold on to all the time while I'm hanging out, walking around town, shopping, clubbing, whatever. My fully-featured media phone already does fine for GPS, short IMs, reminders, e-mail, etc.

So... carry it around the house? Well, there are only a few reasons to do that.

eBook reading: the display is only 1024x768. Have you ever tried to read PDFs at that resolution? Most of the ebooks I download are PDFs. Try it sometime. Something with an eInk display is preferred when you're trying to read for long periods.

Anything that requires typing: see above. It's shit to type on, not meant for more than a short sentence at a time.

So what's the iPad good for? Browsing porn in the bathroom? No Flash, so most porn sites won't work. You'd have to download the files and view them that way.

With every other Apple device, it has a strength.

The iPod delivers a good music experience.
The iPhone delivers a good phone experience.
Apple laptops and computers deliver good computing experiences (if the software you need to use is available on OSX.)

The iPad delivers... mediocre everything. It has no specific function, and each function it does perform is half-assed.

The only thing that makes this iPad thing a complete failure, and anyone that considers them a techie an utter retard for buying into it is the lack of flash.

Yes I agree, Apple guys are so snob with no Apple jewels (Flash technology is a jewel despite Adobe).
Flash is today 1 of the 2 main technology to deliver RIA experiences: Flash and AJAX/JavaScript, Silverlight and JavaFX are quite a fail, HTML5 can support only a little part of Flash Technology (video streaming but Flash players are light years better).
Over 99% web users (worldwide) have Flash plugins in their browsers, all the browsers support Flash.

Times are changed, ipod and iphone miracles are past, Ipad will challenge a battle and will loose.

You guys are making points that only 1% of the consumer market cares about, So to say that the iPad will fail because of flash is wrong, 600k iPads sold already...I'd say thats not bad.

To me and, from the way it's been marketed, for most people the iPad is simply a toy, it's not a productivity device, it's just something people have been wanting for years, a computer with a good touch screen interface that's not huge and slow.

600K iPads sold is the product of the hyphenated marketing strategies of Apple (they should sell ice cubes in Antartica) and from a marketing perspective they are unbeatable.

I will buy a slte/ipad when they have wireless HDMI, this would be the killer thing to have, you could switch content from the device to your TV with a swipe. I know some laptops now have wireless HDMI so when it get's squeezed into a tablet then it will be time to buy.

glad to see another ipad type computer with windows OS. At the end it all comes down to price and features and in this economy I really dought there will be a significant amount of sales.

I don't know what kind of logic you use, but how could it possibly be *worse* typing on the iPad? It's like 5 times bigger, everything else is the same... I find it really easy to type fast as hell on it. It's almost the same size as the keyboard on my macbook pro, without the additional keys on the sides.

It's specific use... you might have a better argument there. Somebody like you who is probably very comfortable doing things on your computer because you do it so much might find yourself wishing you had tools available. I use mine to just browse the web and read articles/news and shit while im sitting on the couch because it's much more comfortable than sitting with a hot ass laptop on me. I do, however, ocassionally stumble onto a site that I want to turn on SEO Quake or some shit and I cant. I'm also a tab freak and normally switch around with like 15 tabs at once, which is obviously not something feasible on the iPad.

In my opinion, it's not meant for DOING THINGS. It's meant for VIEWING THINGS.

Forget the old iPad and slate nonsense.

This is where it's at. (Particularly as shown in that first video).

dear god that thing is bad ass. I agree fuck both those other options... when the fuck can I buy this?

Why the hell would anyone want to write the address for a website in the url bar? Fucking have a hard enough time recognizing my own handwriting sometimes and now I'm trusting a tablet to decode my chicken scratch?

Ya the interface is slick and all, but it's nothing that can (and probably already has been) done on the iPad with the exception of the camera shit which would look ridiculous being done on a tablet.

Has anyone ever tried actually using one of those HP touch computers? They are a fucking joke. Tablet computing is about more then being able to use your finger as a damn mouse. Apple has it down pact. Sure if you want to take the "finger as a mouse" option then you can download one of several awesome RDP clients for the iPad.

Also the "wepad"??? Comon that's just fucking stupid. The UI sucks dick too.

EDIT**

Oh and on the issue of flash, a ton of authority sites have already made the switch to HTML5 since the release of the iPad. They realize that this IS the future of portable computing, and are adopting to the change. Adobe can whine all they want. Flash needs to go down with I.E 6.

right... why in the hell would someone want a productive device of the iPad.. gee.... Are you frickin serious? the iPad is basically worthless for anything work related. its designed for entertainment yet lacks flash support... which is buckets of fail. And I'm really tired of people bringing up html5 like its a flash replacement. Guess what homeslice.. it only replaces video. Flash has a fuckload of other functions like online games for example. And if you think a crapload of sites are going to switch to HTML5 and drop flash you are fucking HIGH... only 2 browsers even support html5 and it'll take a decade for the world to catch up (note how many people still use IE6) and if you think sites are just going to dump their users in droves just so they can work on an iPad you clearly have issues.

the ipad is a load of shit just like everything else apple puts out. they just do incredibly well at marketing, and sell you something that you dont need in anyway. so the only way to "kill" the ipad were to be if it ever lived

i disagree. If apple can keep locking out flash and growing their share of mobile / portable you will see much faster html5 adoption.

Also it doesn't just replace video. If that's what you think of it you need to go read the spec.

It's a great device, just because it doesn't do what you want it to do doesn't make it bad. The only time you see flash today is video (which is done better with html5 anyways), mostly shitty games, and ads. Most people aren't going to miss the ads, you can still get your video on an iPad, and the only real viable genre of flash games for an iPad is tower defense. All the rest of them are basically going to be unplayable.

And for the most part, all the really good flash games, are already available as apps on an iPod/Phone/Pad anyways.

You have to look at Apples target market here. The people who they are going after really don't give a flying fuck about any of the stuff they mentioned, or they would have put it in the device.

All the sites people to regularly for the most part, will work on an iPad. Apple - iPad-ready websites

Most people just want something that does what they said it would well. And that's what an iPad does. I can look at my pictures, various documents, keep track of my weight, look at maps, [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pp8h97oCrX4&"]draw really cool shit[/ame], and some other stuff.
