Open Letter to Fans from Cavaliers Majority Owner Dan Gilbert

Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.

You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE"

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.

Sorry, but that's simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow-up to become.

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

Just watch.

Sleep well, Cleveland.

Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day....

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:

DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue....

Dan Gilbert
Majority Owner
Cleveland Cavaliers

LOL, pretty harsh. They have no chance at beating Lebron to a championship. I just hope people understand that Cleveland fans are bitter as fuck not because he left, but because of the way he did it. He had no contact with anyone at the Cavs about his decision since they went out in the playoffs and called them 5 minutes before his 1 HOUR LONG kick to the nutsack of Cleveland on ESPN. Way to leave your home town hanging and rip the heart out of the city on national TV. Its cool though, he donated to the boys and girls club. I never knew he had a tattoo that said Loyalty on him...i lol'd. :D

yeah, he is a role model to kids for sure. 100%. Athletes have been role models for years.

Side note: i am a bit annoyed that people keep calling Bosh a Superstar when that guy really hasn't done a damn thing (in the NBA)

People that are mad at Lebron have a right to be but where did you guys want him to go? Miami is the most logical place to go with Wade and Bosh.. Times have changed and it is nearly impossible to carry a team by yourself. Kobe and Jordan both had nice supporting cast whereas Lebron's best role player was Mo Williams. He needed help and thats what he got now.

Just counting the four major professional sports and 2 major NCAA sports in the last 30 years:

Detroit Lions = 0
NE Patriots = 3
Detroit Tigers = 1
Boston Red Sox = 2
Detroit Red Wings = 4
Boston Bruins = 2
Detroit Pistons = 3
Boston Celtics = 6

MSU Spartans Basketball = 2
BC, BU, NE, HA Basketball = 0
Michigan Wolverines football = 1
BC, BU, NE, HA Football = 0
BC, BU, NE, HA Hockey = 9

Detroit = 11
Boston = 22

Just sayin'

Not to mention, I wouldn't be surprised if NY or LA has more than Boston.

Figured I'd toss in my opinions in this thread. I am from Cleveland, and I am (and always will be) a Cavs fan, although I'm not a huge basketball guy.

I don't blame Lebron for leaving Cleveland. I did the same thing.

HOWEVER, I do think his choice and methodologies were downright retarded.

Let me tell you how to NOT do PR:

You leave everyone hanging all year to make your decision. OK Fine.
Then you make a media circus about the decision in the weeks up to the decision, calling yourself the King (when you have not won a championship). Now anyone not in a related city is getting annoyed.
Then, on national television, you spend an hour narcissistically stabbing your home town in the back!
ALL so that you can be second-fiddle on SOMEONE ELSE'S team?

Lebron downright quit during the playoffs. Everyone knows that. His legacy was already tarnished. Now he completely destroys it by leaving. Will he win championships? Probably. But are they his? No, they are D Wade's.

Kobe and MJ are laughing themselves to death right now. They would have stuck around and won it. MJ would have silently done it, Kobe made a spectacle but not this badly.

After that playoff disaster, I knew he was gone. But I really hoped it was Chicago, maybe New York.

This is what happens when your "marketing gurus" are high school grads from the ghetto of Akron, OH. I wouldn't sponsor this guy for $10 now.

In the meantime, Dan Gilbert's reaction... classic.

Personally, I loved it (as did everyone from Cleveland). Professionally, I also loved it, because I'm not professional. But if he stages a war, this COULD turn into a PR nightmare. He needs to do it right and focus on rebuilding the Cavs.

We'll see where he goes, but Gilbert is playing with fire... hope it works out for him. I support his ways.

Good thing he lives in Crakron. He won't have to step foot in Cleveland ever again until he comes back to play.

His house is like 10 minutes from me. I live right down the road from his old highschool.

<sarcasm>I don't know him personally, but I know people that know him and apparently he is a douchebag. Shocking, I know. </sarcasm>

i dont care that he fucking left, and i cant hope for ohio to win anything ever. I do think that the way he did it was fucking lame as hell and I can hope that he never gets his ring.

He quit on his team in the playoffs - that makes him a chump, not a role model.

LeBron hasn't done anything either, but he calls himself "The King". Wade is Batman, so now LeBron can be Robin, which is all he ever was anyway - a sidekick. He's not a leader, or a warrior, or any of that and he has proven it over the last 7 years. Miami can't win with the roster they have now, but even if they fill in the blanks over the next couple years and finally win, LeBron won't get shit for credit. He'll get the same credit that Pippen always got for winning with Jordan. He's just a really good #2 now. He would have been better off being the man in New York or Chicago, but deep down LeBron knows he's not good enough to be the man so he's going to ride on DWade's jock and hope he gets his precious ring.

disagree.

taking a team on the verge of bankruptcy to being legit title contenders (not to mention the conference championship he got before Duncan and Parker Swept his ass) is totally an accomplishment. Taking them all the way to the title? of course a way bigger one. 1 man cannot win titles. never has happened, never will.

i dont know what to say about folks thinking he gave up. I don't think any NBA player would give up in a game

Spooked? sure. Big 3 got in his head? without question, but i watched every one of those games, and he didn't look like he gave up to me.

Are you kidding me...really? Go watch game 5 again. The guy was beaten, abused, and knew it so he just stopped trying. Sure he could use some better supporting players, but lets not act like there would never be a good chance to win a title in Cleveland with it being his team eventually. His current Cleveland team had the best record in the league for the last 2 years straight, remember? And I believe they were in the NBA Finals the year before that even tho they got swept. They just needed to learn how to step up in the playoffs or needed to get someone that could.

Again, its not that he left Cleveland that people are talking shit about him. It is the classless way he did it. And as others have said, he will never have the respect Jordan or Kobe has even if he wins 5 or 6 rings...period...and he obviously does not care so neither do I. I just think people expected more from the image of him that was built by Nike, Cleveland, Dan Gilbert, the fans, etc.

On to the next one...Durant?

On to the next one...Durant?

I'm not a basketball fan (play it all the time, just can't stand to watch the game), but I have a new favorite player in the league. Not only is Durant every bit as good as LeBron or Wade (not quite Kobe yet), but he's one of the classiest, most humble, down to earth guys in the league. He is the Anti-LeBron.
