On the firing line
I'm sick of smelling like an ashtray and being a slave to a burning stick of death.

So... getting some Chantix to try help me quit smoking.

Curious if anyone else has experience with Chantix. Did it help?

I'm actually doing a cold turkey attempt right now.

I'm pretty sick of smoking and blowing cash on shit that is slowly killing me.

I quit cold turkey in 2008.

You have to want to stop. You have to learn to dislike cigarettes. Your brain will try to fuck with you. Don't be weak. Don't have one.

Don't hang out with smokers either. Too easy to bum a cigarette in a weak moment.

Do it Mike. gl

Cold turkey is the best way to go... seriously

I was smoking at least three joints of weed mixed with tobacco consistently each and every day...

When i decided to stop, literally, the first two weeks were the hardest... I literally had to force myself not to phone my weedguy or pick up cigs from the local shop... But after that, it was easy as hell...

Go cold turkey man! its the best way.. I've been clean for 5 months now and i get absolutely no urges to jump back on the wagon

Being around booze is a huge problem for relapsing with me. Working at a bar definitely doesn't help but I've been drinking and smoking for so long it's time to take a step back and re-evaluate things.

Good Luck, Mike!

I wouldn't touch that shit with a 10 foot pole.

I quit over 2 years ago. I started by smoking less of each cigarette rather than less cigarettes. So I'd go from smoking a full one, to 3/4ths, 1/2, 1/4th and then I started cutting the amount. I reached a point where they started to get disgusting and just quit.

My sister tried Chantix. Said it gave her bad headaches and really weird dreams. She didn't quit smoking either.

I quit smoking 4 or so years ago. Full disclosure, I'll occasionally have one (maybe 5 a year). But when I stopped, it was a matter of weaning myself off. I would have a pack every two days. So I made a pack last me four days. Then a week. Then one pack every two weeks and so on until I just didn't have the desire any more.

I quit smoking ~1 pack a day roughly 170 days ago. Shit, almost half a year.

Anyway - this book was clutch. It took 2 attempts and a few weeks to finish it, but it was crucial for quitting (no patches or gum or whatever)

I doubt any of these replacements will work.

If you want to quit any bad habits, the trick is to do so in the hardest situation.
For example you should quit smoking right before an occasion where you obviously would smoke a lot (party, holidays, etc). If you achieve only that, you are already free.

As weird as it sounds, the one (and basically only) thing I've heard really good feedback on is hypnosis.

Known quite a few people who have tried the usual -- gum, patches, drugs, etc., and always with mixed results. Known a few people who've done hypnosis, and they swear by it.

I'm in the process of quitting cold turkey and I'm becoming very agitated.

I never considered myself a full fledged smoker, just someone who did it under certain circumstances (mostly bummed, hardly bought). Last deployment I ramped up to a pack a day (as long as it was around).

Came home and the habit followed.

It's tough, and I notice it doesn't take much to piss me off as of late, but I'm hoping it gets better. I thought I'd heard that after 2 days, the nicotine is supposedly out of your system. Not sure if that's true, and I'm not really sure what benefit that has to the whole process of quitting, but let me know if the products you try are helpful. I might consider.

Good luck man. I hate the smell too. Really I had only smoked when I drank. I finally decided to stop drinking as well. So smoking for me will now be a lot easier to quit. How long have you been smoking for?

At some point I just got sick of smoking. I'll still do it once in a while, almost exclusively when I'm drinking (cause it seems to distract me from the shitty feeling). But on most days the thought of smoking doesn't even cross my mind.

However, in Vegas I smoke a lot. I mean, our grandchildren are going to be watching movies of people smoking in public, INDOORS, and be like whoaaaaa. I feel I need to take advantage of the opportunity while I can.

Also, it should be pointed out that smoking in social situations is a great way to meet girls. Yes, they are smokers...but IF SHE SMOKES SHE POKES AMIRITE

Thanks for the feedback guys!

@Bar - thanks for the book reco. Just downloaded it to the kindle.

Little background: I've been smoking for about 24 years. Quit once about 10 years ago. That lasted two years, then my son was born and got very sick at about 2 months old. Went back to smoking to cope.

Since then I've tried cold turkey several times. Have never managed to pull it off.

My hope, is the drugs will be just enough help to take the edge off and complete the mission.

I honestly hate smoking now. I wake up in the morning and think "ugh, gotta have a cigarette to get started". If I don't, I'm a complete dick to be around.

I know one person that tried hypnosis and she quit for a few months before going back to smoking. Another that took Chantix, and within two weeks she quit and couldn't stand to be around smoke - it actually made her ill. To my knowledge, she hasn't gone back to smoking. My father in law used Zyban and has been smoke free for close to 13 years now.

I agree that the biggest part of all of this is actually wanting to quit. I *want* to quit. I *will* quit.

Thanks for the encouragement.

I wouldn't use Chantix/Champix, it has a lot of potentially very serious side effects like strokes and neuro-psychological disorders.

Don't take it.

Get an electronic cigarette. Worked a treat for me.
Dont get me wrong though, it is still difficult but at least you can cut the poisonous shit out right away and just get the nicotine.
The habit is the bitch to get over, more so than the addiction, in my opinion anyway.

I am going to champion the swedish Snus once again:

It's like an old school nicotine chewing gum, but tastes much better and gives a better effect. Tastes a bit like liqorice. The only risk is cancer in the mouth, but still far less harmful than smoking. For some reason Snus is banned in all of EU but Sweden. Probably some tobacco lobbying involved.
