I'm not going to diss anyone's sport of choice but for me it's all about football.

And by football, I mean soccer.

Most of my relatives are huge baseball and American football fans. Those two sports bore me to tears because there is so LITTLE action. American football is about 70% commercials, replays, and standing around.

Baseball even more so.

I much prefer to watch the NHL or soccer any day.

When the fucking Brits get their own NFL franchise in London it's over for Europe. Yes, when, not if. I would expect several franchises to pop in Europe in the next 10 years or so, but then we'll have to exile you to create an NFL Europe. Your ball kicking teams will fall into second place, much like our Baseball and Basketball.

We are coming for you Europe, I hope your ready for a real mans game.

Fuck I could do this all day:

baseball is my sport of choice. amateur international world cup baseball can be real exciting, too. same for olympic. less primadonnas than MLB

Girls, football (aka soccer) is an ubelievable game often full of tension, aggression and excitement. There are boring games for sure. Some of the modern day players are a bit gay. But its appeal is world-wide across all countries, religions etc. and one thing about the game is that it is non-stop apart from the half-time break after 45 minutes. It flows and moves and anything is possible.

I've watched American football on TV and I found it very stop-start, bitty and full of gaps and people wandering on and off the field. The only time I remember being excited was last February when I was in a bar in in North Carolina and there was some end of season mega game that was won at the last throw. But girls, a LOT of 'soccer' games have that kind of pent-up ending. Many goals are scored in the final 10 minutes of the game.

This seems like a cheap shot but one thing you may or may not realise is that American football was actually invented in ENGLAND: From wiki:
"
The History of American football, a spectator sport in the United States, can be traced to early versions of rugby football. Both games have their origin in varieties of football played in the United Kingdom in the mid-19th century, in which a ball is kicked at a goal and/or run over a line.
American football resulted from several major divergences from rugby, most notably the rule changes instituted by Walter Camp, considered the "Father of American Football". Among these important changes were the introduction of the line of scrimmage and of down-and-distance rules
"
History of American football - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sure there could be an american football franchise in the UK, but it is not likely - there have been a few games at Wembley stadium in London and were well attended but the chances of it taking root in the UK are very slim. Football (soccer) on the other hand will grow in the USA.

The trouble for Yanks is they view it as a 'sport' like theirs.

To an American, following a sport basically means you you'll be sat on your arse, drinking a big tub of cola or beer, chewing peanuts and waving a foam finger around. Whether live or on screen, it's safe, sterile and designed to extract cash. There's no movement in or out of the leagues and the history of the professional sports is so short that you've got no attachment, hell, you care so little about your sports you let the owners move your (haha) 'Franchise' from one city to another.

England alone has 94 professional teams in Football, and thousands that are semi-professional or amateur. Any of those thousands of teams can reach the top if they're successful. Most fans support their teams based on historic ties, supporting the team that their father and grandfather went to see when they were kids.

This is why you just don't get it, it's not a just sport but something totally ingrained into culture. When my team (Blackpool) play Bolton Wanderers they taunt us about a fan of ours they murdered thirty years ago, almost sparking riots. England vs Germany brings out the WW1/2 chants and when Barnsley play Nottingham Forest it kicks off because Barnsley is in a former-mining area and 25 years ago Nottingham mines provided scab labour to break the National Miners Union strike.

This is why the stuff about how it can be boring because it can be 1-0 or 0-0 is fucking dumb. Apart from team rivalries, I've been to some 0-0 games that have been absolutely gripping, end-to-end, two missed penalties, a red card and three times off the woodwork type gripping. I suppose if you're the type of person who moves his lips when he reads and you need a scoreline to tell you if the game was good or not that might be hard to grasp.

Oh, I also love American Football. Great sport, just a shame there's no real passion in it.

how can a game so boring

It's boring to you but obviously millions of people worldwide disagree. I guess the average American must just prefer dumbed down sports like American Football but I find the NFL boring, each to his own..

I'm not a huge soccer fan either but I watch it. It's a good technical game and the level of team work achieved is impressive, also because it's played on such a large scale worldwide it makes for a more competitive sport than any other on the planet.

so wretchedly terrible in just about every way, be beloved by so many people?

I think the same way about cricket, baseball and a number of other spots but I tend not to say it because it's just a stupid thing to say.

EDIT:

Lol I didn't even see that before, that's hilarious. I hope for your sake you're just trolling.

You do know that there was already a NFL Europe from 1991 to 2007 right? :eek7:

It seemed to be more popular in Germany than the UK.

The UK had 2 teams during those years. The London Monarchs played from 1991-1998 and the Scottish Claymores from 1995-2004.

NFL Europe was losing $30 Million per year when they shut it down in 2007. There was 6 teams left at the time, 5 in Germany and 1 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Most of the players were young American NFL players playing through the U.S. off season.

some friends of mine are pretty big football fans and they know watching a football game sucks when i'm around since i'm all in for some good football bashing but this thread is as much fun as reading youtube comments.

I love american football and i even played receiver for like 6 years - hell, i think about start playing again.

It's not like there's a "right" sport just like there's no "right" music and art.

Perhaps they should stop whining and learn to score more than 1 time per hour ... talk about boring

I actually considered it to be a ball rolling pun ... never admit defeat rage, never!

Funny thing is a 14 to 0 American Football game is no dif than a 2 to 0 game in soccer, just cause you call it more point each time people score doesn't make it a higher scoring sport.

Stupid logic.

American football and the other top sports in the US are very different in one huge thing. They are based on structured play sets. innings in baseball the 25 second play-clock in basketball and the down/play system in football.

What that creates is an almost need by US sports fans to NEED quick fixes of win/lose score/miss, well in soccer that really doesn't happen, actually hockey is very similar to soccer in terms of that, and it's # of fans if fighting were disallowed outright in the game would be less than half of what it is now.

It's a cultural thing too, if you didn't grow up watching it with your brothers/dad/family/friends etc... then there really won't a huge acceptance of that sport.

There's a ton of stuff I like watching that people call boring: golf, darts, tennis, hockey and others. Funny enough the one game I can't watch on TV? Baseball. BORING AS FUCK. Live? it's fun, not because of the sport itself but because baseball allows for great party atmospheres during games, peoples eyes don't have to be locked 24/7 to the game.

I think that's another big thing people don't like about soccer here in the u.s. It isn't a game you can get up and do shit during the commercial. You gotta wait to shit/piss/grab food if you don't wanna miss anything.

Sound logic, 14-0 is a relatively boring game too. Even worse 6-0 where all they're doing is kicking the ball.

The main difference in the 2 games is the strategy involved. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there is some kind of a game plan in soccer. But in the NFL, every play is called in by a general that is based on countless hours breaking down this specific opponents history.

^^ Because of this, the difference between soccer & football is the difference between checkers & chess. If you think there is a big plus for soccer seeing there are no breaks in play ... you should get into the tour de france. Talk about excitement.

And to show this is about boring sports and not MLS vs NFL ... If you're interested in a fan friendly game, just look to the NCAA for some basketball (before players grow big heads and go pro). There are like 140 points scored each game.

My favorite game to watch has got to be tennis. Lots of action. Lots of great points. Chicks in miniskirts.

.. go ahead & call that stupid logic

I really hate soccer.. it's kinda like a giant ping pong game.. back and forth back and forth. God forbid someone trips.. they bring out the stretcher.. the game stops for 5 minutes.. he gets up.. shows how tough he is! and on with the game... haha

86,000 people attended the pats/bucs game at wembley a few weeks ago.

Wrong. A score of 14 is 4 scores. Two of them are almost a given but not guaranteed in the slightest and there's more than one way to score on the extra point. Two touchdowns could result in either a score of 12, 13, 14, 15, or 16, depending on if the extra points are made and how they are executed.

Even if you don't count the extra points as scores, it is very rare to see an american football game with less than four scores(either touchdowns or field goals). Because there's more than one way to score, if you can't make it all the way down to the end zone for 6, you can kick a field goal for 3. Even the shittiest teams can usually make two field goals during the course of a game.(unless you're the browns who are apparently shittier than the shittiest)
