The Most IMPORTANT Video You'll Ever See

The video is good. I like the part about the putting a gain on each square and double it on another..

The video is crap.

What is crap about it? He is mainly stating facts about population growth and how there is only so much oil, etc.

He is not saying that it will be impossible for humanity to adapt to it. He is urging humans to focus more on the type of innovations that you say will happen. He wants more focus on solar power and such, and is using real numbers to show why it is going to be necessary to do so.

You mention Gates as one of the brilliant people. Population growth and related issues are one of his big concerns.

WTF Americas.. Do you really study this in College???

I thought every 11 year olds know this shit. How is this the Most Important Video you will ever see?? What was so surprising about the Rule Of 70?

PS: Have only started the Vid 1 of 8

I don't have time right now to respond to everything and other posts above yet.

But if I said Gates was brilliant then that was not what I meant to say. I meant to include Gates and Jobs as those that implemented innovation. They were instrumental in making massive change happen. If either of them did not step up, someone else would have.

The world has the resources to feed and power itself many times over, but mismanagement of those resources, corruption, theft, wastage, lack of innovation, etc. etc. is the problem.

We throw away so much food on a per capita basis. We throw away so much unsold food, mostly produce and meats in the grocery stores. We over fish the oceans and a large percentage of what is caught never gets sold and goes to waste or is turned into fertilizer. African nations would rather wait for handouts than slaughter their own herds or grow their own produce. We continue to burn coal and oil when we have or are on the verge of having vastly more efficient means to power our infrastructure, we are just slow to develop and install them.

If we weren't such a greedy inefficient species we would be doing a whole lot better. This will have to change and it will, it will just take time. It will change before we have to start resorting to eating one another though, so stop talking bullshit and get back to work.

I am sorry. I am not trying to troll the thread, but the subject is ludicrous so I cannot help myself.

The above chart certainly shows how Adam & Eve, had they really lived close to 1,000 years could have populated the earth.

Like I said LukeP, I am sorry, but your passion over worry for the future is misplaced. You underestimate the human capacity for innovation and adaptation. One simple advancement, say in providing unlimited energy, will change the dynamic on its head. How about the ability to make food? One advancement where a super pill gives all the nutrition and calories we need and there goes the problem. One advancement where a material is made with some of the unlimited energy mentioned above and then disappears after use eliminates much of the toxic waste etc.

The market, driven by the mind of those that are rewarded by the market, will address any growth problem as it happens. These academics assume everyone is a real troll, on the public dole, and they do not account for the greatest powers on earth, the human mind and the human will.

The video is crap. Humans, driven by that all powerful self interest, will survive without issue.

Your argument over education is BS also. You are looking to the masses and their crap education. At least they are getting some education. The fact is that the people that are educated in the top universities are far more able than any of the masses. Add to this the ability of our economy to reward those brilliant people that want to skirt education, (Jobs, Gates, Etc) the world will survive.

Navel gazing and admiring these dumb ass professors is for the masses who go to standard universities and still end up one of the masses. Sheer stupidity.

You are very naive.

If someone can provide STATISTICAL EVIDENCE and not your warm fuzzy feelings of why the Earth is not over populated and can be sustained at its current state I would love to look at it and will do so with an open mind.

Hope and dreams do nothing to change anything.

I agree, an insane amount of resources are wasted every minuete.

I am a lot of things, but naive is not one of them. I oftentimes act humble in STS because I do not have the energy to come back each time and refute every point. Do not mistake me for some 20, or even 30 year old that has not already lived life. Been there, done that. You name it and more than once.

You prove the Earth is overpopulated. I proved that there is plenty of geography - dispute any of the following.

1. There is abundant energy available with current technology. The future will no doubt increase the ways we get energy from these sources. The sun, wind, wave motion all without limit to their supply. Not to mention the limited sources, but still hundreds of years worth left, of oil, coal, and natural gas. Oh no, the sky is falling we are running out of energy. Bullshit. There is enough.

2. Agriculture. With current tech we can feed the world many times over. Most farms are not even being utilized properly. Go to many countries and see the under utilization of the land. I know several large rice farmers in the Sacramento Valley - the productivity that they have versus other areas is incredible. The tech they have yet to deploy could make their production skyrocket. Ag science is incredible. There is no limit to food. We could even farm the mountains, the oceans, irrigate and farm the deserts..... no limit.

3. Everything else can be made, manufactured, and developed using non food agriculture, the unlimited untapped energy, and the current technologies that have yet to be deployed.

5. Landfills - as we develop, and have been, 100% biodegradable items this will cease to be a problem.

6. Pollution. From what? Cars and factories? If we utilize the unlimited energy then a majority of their pollution will be eliminated. Then we just need to use more of that energy to assist in cleaning their manufacturing processes.

7. People. I already addressed this. There is abundant land for everyone.

8. You are worried about 200 years from now? I am certain they will be able to inhabit other planets by then.

What do you assume the growth rate to be anyway?

This is a great resource. Click countries like Germany and see the rate. They better stop what they are doing in Afghanistan though.

You see, the more industrialized, the lower the growth rate. Lower growth rate, even negative in the case for come countries significantly alters the exponential equation.

Thats the resource I have used. But, the more industrialized, yes the lower the growth rate, but the more resources used. If you compare the growth of the US with most African countries, yes we are lower, but the resources we consume are ten fold. And even with a low growth rate, trying to slow exponential growth at this point would be extremely hard.

REIMktg:

1-8. You think way too small. Is there abundant land for 100 Trillion people?

Stop pushing this point aside because the film on this page shows how it will happen far sooner than you think.

As for offloading them to other planets: It's been over 35 years since we last went to the nearest rock, and we learned while there that it's too difficult to mine and build a habitat there.

As I type this the very last NASA-funded space mission is in orbit. All the rest depend on private enterprise, and so far they've only found it (potentially) profitable to fly a few billionaires into a low earth orbit for 5 minutes.

We are a LONG way off from travelling to mars... As for going out of the solar system we won't likely ever given the vast interstellar distances that require a one-way trip for anyone involved. -So that is CERTAINLY not a way to reduce the surplus population.

Bottom line: Yes, we can slowly explore space, but moving trillions of people out there is NEVER. GOING. TO. HAPPEN.

Your faith is shocking in almost all points you have made on this thread.

You are advocating nothing more but sticking our collective heads in the sand and having faith in a god to get the next generation through their miserable lives we created for them.

> Oh no, the sky is falling we are running out of energy. Bullshit. There is enough.

In my mind, that's not the issue. The issue is whether our relatively stable, prosperous societies can avoid partial or even complete collapse during a period of rapid adaption from total reliance on fossil fuel/plastic to total reliance on inferior, more expensive or resource intensive alternatives.

We don't even need to run out of fossil fuel. To destabilise our societies it just needs to become prohibitively expensive for the average person to use, and that point will obviously be reached way before the reserves are depleted.

What do you assume the growth rate to be anyway?
It doesn't matter. As long as it is positive, Moxie's point stands... We don't breed linearly, we breed like bacteria, and all population growth charts therefore look like hockey sticks.

Just to remind you again since you still haven't watched the vid:

Birth rates slow, but the total population numbers continue to exponentially grow.

1 billion couples each having 2 children = 4 billion people
2 billion couples each having 1.5 children = 7 billion people
3.5 billion couples each having 1.0 = 10.5 billion people

It's true that each couple on average is more likely to have less kids than ever before. In the above example, birth rates would be cut in half, but overall population numbers are still increasing rapidly.

Now if you add to this fact that the World Average IQ is FALLING, not rising, which means the lowering birth rate has to reverse it's trend sooner or later, you'll soon see a billion new people born every year... And then 3 billion, then 10 billion, etc, WITHIN OUR LIFETIME.
