TylerL - Rehabilitation Day

Well, I didn't want to make this post...but it seems like I have to. Here's my story of Tyler.

After reading his thread, and all his previous threads, I felt that he was sincere in making the necessary steps in changing his ways. I mean, I was young once and had no business experience, and i was able to overcome that, why wouldn't he be able to?

So, I contacted Tyler about a project. After roughly two days, I got a response from him. We chatted on skype about what I wanted (also sent him a PM) and had a heart-to-heart (or so I thought) about his life, his business, his future, etc. I find these things very interesting.

After we finished chatting about life in general, I asked for the turnaround time for a simple 1 page, order form. Not many parts, but I wanted it to look REALLY nice. We agreed on the price, and he said he could ***possibly*** have it done in 1 day. (I say possibly for a reason).

2 days have passed: I contact tyler just to check in, no response.

3 days have passed: no response...at first. He responded "sorry wasn't around". I told him that once he has a preview ready for me, send it to my email address.
This is the first time I asked for a preview, included my email address, and had no response.

4 and 5 days have passed (the weekend) no response...until Sunday. He responded to me like he never even started my project, and he hadn't. I can understand if he was busy, but that's where he should have contacted me at day 2, day 3, or day 4. We are at day 5 right now. Once again, I go over what I want. Conversation below:

[8/1/2010 3:48:19 PM] Tyler Lemieux: its been two days, i have half a dozen projects on the go
[8/1/2010 3:48:32 PM] DeShea Witcher: it has been two days?
[8/1/2010 3:48:41 PM] Tyler Lemieux: its sunday
[8/1/2010 3:48:52 PM] DeShea Witcher: i contacted you Wed about this project.
[8/1/2010 3:49:17 PM] Tyler Lemieux: i responded to you thursday night saying id probably start the next day
[8/1/2010 3:49:25 PM] Tyler Lemieux: and i said it would be done before the weekend was over
[8/1/2010 3:49:29 PM] Tyler Lemieux: its still the weekend
[8/1/2010 3:49:35 PM] DeShea Witcher: Tyler look.
[8/1/2010 3:49:40 PM] DeShea Witcher: I understand you're busy.
[8/1/2010 3:49:45 PM] DeShea Witcher: You're a great designer.
[8/1/2010 3:49:50 PM] DeShea Witcher: why wouldnt you be?
[8/1/2010 3:49:53 PM] DeShea Witcher: All I'm saying
[8/1/2010 3:50:00 PM] DeShea Witcher: is a little communication is important.
[8/1/2010 3:50:09 PM] DeShea Witcher: I'm not upset.
[8/1/2010 3:50:24 PM] DeShea Witcher: But it would have been nice for you to contact me and let me know when you could start.
[8/1/2010 3:50:30 PM] Tyler Lemieux: alright, im sorry
[8/1/2010 3:50:31 PM] DeShea Witcher: It's like i just reminded you to start.
[8/1/2010 3:50:33 PM] Tyler Lemieux: i do tend to slack
[8/1/2010 3:50:37 PM] Tyler Lemieux: im working on it as we speak
[8/1/2010 3:51:08 PM] DeShea Witcher: Just to let you know, I'm working today, and yes it's sunday. But i have an obligation to my clients to fulfil their orders.

On this day, I once again give him my email address to send the preview. Well, 4 hours later, I have a preview. BAD THING: It looks like it was done in 15 minutes in photoshop, didn't look like anything I wanted, and basically we are back at square one. After explaining everything that was wrong with it, we hit the drawing board again.

Day 6: No response

Day 7: He tells me that he's sending a preview in a few hours. What happens? Nothing get's sent to me. At all. Highly upset as I've wasted 7 days so far, have projects lined up, and had to push back deadlines FOR MY OWN WEBSITE.

Day 8: Is today. I'm quickly losing hope, just like everyone else.

WHY IS ALL THIS TALENT BEING WASTED LIKE THIS???

All i wanted was a fucking 1 page, order form with a unique touch. What I got was my project pushed to the backburner. I run a highly sucessful SEO business and this would not be tolerated in my business. Why?

Reputation can make or break a business.

You know I am just curious since I never followed all of the other Tyler threads. What exactly do you/does he do when not working on clients? Is it like a fuck it and smoke pot all day or is he addicted to world of warcraft?

I too wish to know the answer to this mystery

Oooooooh he's so talented.

Wake up guys. There are many other amazing designers on here without this bs.

This is going to get good:

For the record, if someone starts posting about how fucking busy they are that's a clue that they won't have time for you.

I was going to send him a project two Mondays ago until he told me about how's he's swamped. Combine that with his past "management issues" and I realized I'd test him out if he isn't too busy.

Onthewayup
For a guy who runs a "successful seo firm" you should know how to allocate workloads with contractors.

I spoke with him on AIM about letting him use my script that I personally use to manage clients, which is something I custom made that handles ordering + a members area where members specify what they want, lets them know when they can expect revisions, request revisions, view the designs / revisions, and download project files.. He seemed interested but we haven't really followed up on it.

I think in the end it boils down to organization and structure, particularly more so with some people than others. Using emails / IM to manage clients is difficult if you have a lot of simultaneous clients like I do, which can be 15+ sometimes.

Ummm... All you have to do is google CRM if you really want to.

I had an issue like this [overload] once when my design shop sold 72 websites in one week.

There' only one problem here, he charges $75 for designs that are worth $300, at least. $1,000 if we where local clients.

I design, and consider myself pretty good but it's not my passion. The only time I can make awesome (think unmatchedstyle.com awesome) designs and have the motivation and mindset to make them is when I charge clients $500 + and work on MY terms, not on some stupid, unnecessary deadline. Designing for me is a trial and error game, it sometimes takes time, inspiration takes time. Maybe that's his deal.

Tyler, do yourself a favor and charge more (tons more) on some other medium than WickedFire. Dont get a bunch of projects, get 2 maybe 3 projects per week at $300-$500. Have people call you, and put your terms. Under promise and try to overdeliver. If they want you to design one of their sites tell them: "Sounds great, I am able to start on your site in X days. After that it will probably take me another week to finish it to be safe."

Seeing the talent you have you are damn right people would be willing to wait 2 weeks for your designs. Now, if you finish before, simply send it via email before the deadline. It will only take 5 minutes. Your client will be happy and will refer you to other people because you delivered. Not because you where super fast, or because you where super cheap. Because you delivered.

Designing and working with clients doesn't have to be a pain in the ass, bring you stress over deadlines or anything. Just put your own terms and work within them. if they don't like it they can go to the Indian that does shit work for 30 bucks.

Position yourself godamn it, be hard to work with, be expensive, have a longer than usual delivery time. But once YOU put your terms, deliver. No excuses.

Listen, sorry for wasting your week and only coming up with one preview, but the second you told me that you wanted me to work on top of your current design, it pretty much went out the window for me. Certain designs I don't want my name associated with, even in my own head. I'll get up the balls to tell you next time, but something about you kept me from saying "sorry I can't work with this design, it's embarassing". (Don't take that as a swing at your site, that's just how I work)

Wow. Honestly, I don't really take that to heart. We were actually going to get you to redesign it after the order form is finished so that we can at least get that up, but it's all good.

The level of arrogance and lack of professionalism is MIND BOGGLING. Anyone who hires you after reading this thread deserves any of the bullshit they're getting.

Your clients are embarrassing? You fucking charge third world prices! It's not like you're protecting your high price point....

You definitely do not come across as a straight shooter.

Some people would rather have 4 orders of 75$ tasks, than 1 order of 150$ in any given time.
