Why The Future Is Better Than You Think

It wouldnt matter what time you went back to, the nature of man has stayed the same.

But in the world we live in, the nature of man is the same.. the weapons getting more and more powerful.. one day using them in large scale...

What you're saying is that human nature stayed the same (in other words, that there will always be wars, for example) but that nowadays, a large-scale conflict similar to WWI or WWII or a could have catastrophic consequences.

Unfortunately, I agree with you.

Guerilla doesn't but I do.

I asked you to answer my question because after drawing the line, there has to be an answer.

The world is either becoming a better place as time passes or it isn't.

On the one hand, you have advantages such as an increased life expectancy and on the other hand, you have disadvantages such as weapons that are powerful enough to generate catastrophic consequences if they end up being used in a large-scale conflict.

Again, I agree.

But I'm asking you to draw an imaginary line and answer just one question:

If you had a time machine at your disposal, would you choose to live in the past?

So after analyzing the pros and cons I mentioned previously, what would your choice be?

If you'd choose another time period, then it means you think the world isn't becoming a better place. If you choose the present, then it means you think the world is becoming a better place as time passes.

p.s. Nice work on the 114 positive feedback at 100%.

Thanks :)

Diamond Pete is quite the optimist, nonetheless.

I agree that technology will greatly speed up, but wherever the authoritarian government of the day exists, there will be an imbalance of what that technology is used for.

Sadly, the US is the worst offender these days. It's horrible policies are rapidly driving innovators away from our shores and into BRICS countries... Does it learn? Not without bloodshed. Clearly Peter was talking about teh BRICS nations and not us, because here we are going to see little technological advancement that isn't used AGAINST us.

If Paul were to win, however... ;)

Also, the person who says "cyber attacks!" and "doomsday" in the first 11 seconds of the film, was Mo Rocca, making any argument completely invalid.

That being said... I agree. Shit sucks now, temporarily, but the future things will be amazing!

If you had a time machine at your disposal, would you choose to live in the past?

I would go back to 1984 to see the Tigers win the World Series again, then promptly start betting on all the sporting events whose outcomes I could remember, buying up stocks with my winnings, registering all the best domain names, etc...

Or is that not what you meant?

guys got awesome goals, but all i heard was that the government is and is going to be our fucking downfall.

/fail

little note on technology and weapons and all that shit.... Nuclear weapons has made war on a global scale unthinkable, and basically unwinnable For all sides.

Thus you get low intensity conflicts like Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and post-soviet you get Somalia and Iraq and Afghanistan.... Again

Super/Smart weapons have made wars shorter and with fewer casualties

Man is highly adaptable which is why we're the dominant species on this planet. No species is as adaptable as we are, both to circumstance and to opportunity.

Organisms modifying their behaviour in response to changes in their environment = evolution

Cockroaches and jellyfish have been around over 300 million years.

I wonder how fucked up Wickedfire will be in 2030.

Virtual dickrolls?

Until the biological weapons get in the wrong hands...

True... but something should be said that we've come 60+ years with no major nuclear/biological/chemical attack.

Despite the fact that we've had two major opposing political blocks with their fingers on the button for 50 of those years.

Ok, if you think the world isn't getting better, answer the question I posted in this thread:

If you had a time machine at your disposal, would you choose to live in the past?

... if so, which time period and why?

I'll answer your question. I'd rather live in the 50s, 60s, 70s, or 80s again for a few reasons. One, music and film was much better back then. Those industries hadn't been taken over by the Illuminati yet so art was just as important as making a buck. Now, both of those industries use marketing templates to sell the 'art.' There is no longer any variety in what we are given and the quality of the art has suffered too for a number of reasons.

Secondly, I prefer a simpler existence. Who cares if some guy in Africa has a cell phone now. For that matter, who cares if I have a cellphone. We got along without them before and our lives didn't suffer because of it. In fact, our relationships with people were better for it because we didn't rely on text or IM's to talk with people.

The only major advantages I see in the future are technological advantages in medicine which will keep us living longer. Other than that, I don't see many other positives to living in the future because our happiness relies on other people and as we can see right now, other people are working to make our lives worse, not better.

You might have read in the news recently about the Dual use of H5N1 research and the gov agency who tried to kill the research. They tried because they are very concerned that publishing the details of the experiments in which they created an airborne, mammalian adapted H5N1 strain would put the recipe in the hands of terrorists or basement biochemists, potentially releasing the doomsday virus and threatening the demise of us humans.

They also need to be concerned that Nation States (read China) has the virus already neatly wrapped up in vials in their military biolabs. These players would not hesitate to use them to further their goals or save their own necks from an uprising population (read the latest news of Bo in China).

Either way... nature is also tinkering with the genetic makeup of H5N1 and is slowly mutating toward human adaptation.

Nuke war is a distinct possibility with all the crap going on these days with Iran and NK... but IMHO the one to watch is H5N1, either a natural mutation or an intentional release.

I do think it is funny that after watching the video, so many people miss the point and go back to talking about fear.

Folks taking self-driving cars for granted, worried instead about military technologies they know absolutely nothing about.

Don't forget the after-effects of chemicals / bombs used in war. Just one example is the use of depleted uranium in bombs. It will continue to affect a huge area (thousands of square miles) for decades after the war is over
