Well, it's almost equally impressive that he didn't lose a lot of his gains. He took advantage of the upside and avoided a lot of the downside in the markets. If you think it's impossible to beat the market over long periods of time, shouldn't his returns averaged out to normal or worse than the market average after 20 years?

You can obviously beat the market if you are really smart or lucky or both. I agree though that very few do and many try to beat it and end up under performing the market.

No, there is no obviously beating the market because you're really smart. The only guy you have found so far is some guy who made a non-detailed blog comment about his 20 year investment where he didn't beat the market for nearly half the time. If you get lucky, you can be profitable in the short term, just like gambling. There is no stock investment strategy that beats the market over the long term other than insider trading.

Ok, I disagree.

Great. Now find me 1 example (there should be plenty out of the millions of stock traders that exist). So far you've found me none.

I gave you Buffet and that blog comment guy. I'm sure there are lots of others, but don't have the time to research it atm and it probably wouldn't mean anything to you anyway. There are lots of funds or asset classes that outperform the stock market for years at a time. If you are smart enough to know when to shift your money around, you can beat the market.

btw, Buffet buys publicly traded stocks. He owns lots of businesses and does business deals and all that, but he also does things like buy index funds (or options on the market somehow or something like that) when the market tanks, BAC when it was at all time lows, IBM because he thinks it was undervalued, etc...

Somewhat off topic, but I believe mGrunin posted about Sprint in this thread earlier. Last Monday I bought in for 1000 shares at $2.52. Right now it's at $2.98 so it's doin pretty well. I'm probably gonna hold on for the long term but I didn't really expect it to shoot up so quickly.

Yep! I did mention it before. They have only gone down so much because of a few recent fuck ups, but they are cleaning out there problems. Should be going up in the horizon.

^ I doubt that they have been fucked up since about 2005 and have gone no where but down. . . nothing seems to be pointing towards an upward trend in the stock

They went down from the 20's right after completing the Nextel merger. Then they stayed at $4.50 - $5.75 for over 2 years before some of the board members got into nasty lawsuits from the shareholders. (tax evasion)

Behind Sprint's Recent Outperformance - Seeking Alpha

Good article on what's been going down with Sprint lately.

For me, it's worth the risk. I'm going to follow it next week but I'll be looking to place a 100 contract order on $3 calls ~ $5,000. Expiration date is Jan 19 2013. It's a worthwhile risk for me.

I'll read the article.

But I did speak without looking at anything, I just looked at the charts and if it can break over $3 and hold over that it could be a good buy it has broken through its MA's which is nice but it will have to get through that level of resistance for it not to be a false rally.

Edit: still wouldn't consider it a long term investment but I rally consider anything long term!

I think at its current price, it seems like even the asset value of Sprint is worth it's current valuation. It has a network, contracts, and is in a high barrier to entry market. It's not like the cell phone industry is dying anytime soon so their assets aren't going to become obsolete.

Sprint is the 3rd largest tele company in the US, behind Version and AT&T. It's not going anywhere. A big burden on the company is the current CEO as well - Dan Hesse. Ever since he took position, the stock has only gone down from his discussions. It's highly likely that he will be removed from his position in the next 12 months.

right I was pointing out that they don't even own their own towers which happened in 2008. . .

I've followed them for years, I am aware that they are the third largest and you are right they won't go anywhere because the government won't let them just like the government didn't let T-Mobile sell to ATT they don't want to diminish competition. . . but again none of this has anything to do with the stock. Companies can still exist and have a shitty stock.

Can they turn around sure, but will they? Who knows hence why it is not a long term investment. If you want long term you invest in stuff like coca-cola or yum
