Lethal injection goes wrong... Time to ditch the death penalty?

Ohio is to try again to execute a man convicted of murder after his death by lethal injection was botched earlier this week when technicians spent two hours in a futile hunt for a vein able to take a needle.
At one point, Romell Broom, who was convicted of rape and murder of a teenage girl 25 years ago, tried to help prison officers find a suitable vein by moving around and flexing his muscles. The prison governor later thanked him for his cooperation.
What critics of the death penalty are describing as the "virtually unprecedented" failure of the attempt to execute Broom, 53, has again raised questions over its continued use in the US. Concerns have also been raised over a case in Texas in which a man is facing execution despite an admission by the judge and prosecutor in his trial that they were lovers.
...
Texas is also grappling with revelations that it may have executed an innocent man five years ago after he was convicted of murdering his three children through arson on the basis of deeply flawed "scientific" evidence that has been compared to the stuff of witch trials.

I'm sure some people here are pro-death penalty, but I've yet to hear a convincing argument for why it should continue to exist in a modern democratic society. I'm fairly sure there's only one developed country left that still enforces it.

I guess it helps keep the sheeple under control by re-enforcing their distorted view of justice and helping to add to their daily dose of violence. I can understand why a government might want it and how the dumb fucks are conditioned into thinking it is a good thing, but what are the reasoned, logical arguments for state-sanctioned murder?

I never understood why they use injections. There's so many much easier and less painful ways like CO2 poisoning/hypoxia.

And yeah I'm for getting rid of it.

The people who get executed usually deserve it so i really don't care about them. But capital punishment solves nothing. It only creates more hatred and sorrow. Not to mention all the people that have been released from death row. One can only guess how many innocent people have been executed.

i never understood why they keep some of these people alive after the shit they do, does keeping them alive in prison even make sense? I mean a lot of them will be in there for the rest of their natural lives. Waste of money IMO.

Time to ditch the death penalty?

He raped and murdered a little girl. This fucktard is the poster boy for the death penalty.

Can't find a vein?? Make the fucker stand up and do some jumping jacks or something. It's not that hard to pump those suckers up.

We can never be sure he wasn't framed or a victim of poor police investigation. Even if he confess, we can't be sure. Over a hundred people have been sentenced to death and then proven innocent. This is reason enough to abolish capital punishment.

One strange effect of the death penalty is that it RAISES instead of lowers the number of violent crimes.

There are 2 possible reasons for this:

1) The idea of "an eye for an eye" or a "I'll get the fucker first, then it is ok if I get executed" mentality.

2) The notion that violence and even murder is an "acceptable" punishment, as it is even used by the state.

The promise of a life in prison seems to deter more people from violent acts and murder.

I did a paper about this in University. This is not really a good argument as it is not cheaper to kill someone on death row than life in prison.

Death row prisoners are usually on death row for years, maybe more than a decade. And there are automatic appeals and retrials.

All of the paperwork, costs, higher security, and then the actual execution end up costing more than life in prison for the majority of prisoners.

I think it should be outlawed or at least halted until the legal system is much more accurate though.

It would be bad for prosecutors as they often use "taking the death penalty off the table" as a tool for getting cooperation or confessions.

Why is it that >50% of the people in favor of the death penalty cite cost savings as a reason? The very first point-counterpoint in any death penalty discussion always goes like this:

"Keeping murderers and rapists alive is a waste of taxpayer money, so I support the death penalty."
"But it costs much more to execute someone than to keep them in jail for life."
"I can't hear you... and I still support the death penalty for revenge purposes."

Then they apparently wander off to another instance of the debate in another forum/thread and repeat the same argument. I don't know how you could possibly have a considered opinion on this issue if you don't know the first thing about it.

The cost savings don't add up at when you look at people like this guy, on death row for 20 years.

There's possibly an argument for assisted suicide, if a person would rather die than spend the rest of their life incarcerated, but even then it would have to be absolutely no doubt as to guilt... or mental state. Along the same lines as Euthanasia really, which strangely it seems many of those who are pro-capital punishment are against. (I guess a lot 'em believe in the old testament God too, not the "turn the other cheek" guy.)

Don't ditch the death penalty.

Allow it only in cases of guilty pleas and DNA matched evidence that's indisputable only.

Ditch Lethal Injection. You wanna do a job, do it right... (you'll see it!)

I'm all for getting rid of the death penalty. The mere fact that we have killed hundreds of innocents through this part of our "justice" system should be enough of a reason. I'm more worried about getting wrongly sentenced than by getting killed in a terrorist attack.

The mere thought of someone innocent being executed nearly makes me ill. I have a pretty vivid mind's eye and can put myself in their shoes and it's scary as hell.

The courts have previously denied access to DNA testing on appeals in numerous cases.

There are a lot of false confessions from people who are mentally ill, especially in high profile cases. I don't know how often those translate into guilty pleas, because maybe a psychologist and the lawyer would intervene before that, but there are people who try to prove themselves guilty when they're not.

Man wrongly convicted of murder....time to ditch the court system?

Now you can see how retarded that headline looks.
