Oddly enough, over 100 million of your countrymen are going to be watching World Cup Football on TV this tournament, placing you roughly in 8th position globally. Over 40 thousand of your countrymen are in South Africa watching the games live, second only to the host country in numbers.

That makes it about as "American" as any other sport you watch.

Assuming the stat is accurate, yeah, there are reasons for that. Think about it...
 
The World Cup is on ESPN and ESPN 2 which get millions of viewers/day no matter what is on, simply because most males always check ESPN every day multiple times per day. I hope you don't think that means there are 100 million people in this country that give a shit about soccer.

ok- but the NBA finals- which was the most watched in 12 years only got 28.2 million viewers.

So the US/England game was watched by more than half of the audience watching the most watched NBA finals match in 12 years.

And nearly equal to the world series.

Not to mention it's fucking retarded to compare something which airs during primetime (American Idol) to something which aired on a weekday at 10 AM EST.
 
Americans hate it because they're not the best at it. They love the Olympics because it's the only true "world event" they're involved in, which they can have some pride in, without the risk of losing and feeling a bit inferior.

They don't support their team in the World Cup, because they're not expected to win it, therefore their pride might be damaged. Welcome to real world sport America. Wear your heart on your sleeve, have some pride, cheer the wins, shout about the losses and feel the pain of Football. It's part of the fun and why it's the world's biggest sporting event.

Given the fact that the game was at 10 fucking AM in the morning, I'd say it was fairly impressive. If that game had been primetime, your talking 40 million viewers easily.

What other sport in the world are thousands of American's in a bar at 7am in the morning watching? Certainly NOT the olympics.
