ooooh lets see how bout :

Habitat for humanity
toys-for-tots
planned parenthood
The american Cancer Socitey
S.H.A.R.E

I don't believe these organizations required anyone's god in order to be good and decent charities....there's thousands more...would you like me to go on?

Organized religion has nothing to do with charity, per se. It's just a by-product something to help it fly under the radar.

These really are not atheist organizations. They just do not officially have any affiliation with any religion. I have first hand experience with three of your five above and most of the employees and volunteers of those organizations had religious beliefs.

Face it. The religious communities in the United States are the ones that carry the load when it comes to charity.

" Organized religion has nothing to do with charity, per se. It's just a by-product something to help it fly under the radar" WOW!!! you must have had a really bad experience in organized religion at some point in your life. You really hate religion? and people with religious beliefs? I have no problem with anyones religious beliefs or dis-beliefs at all. The problem I have arises when a person has so much bias and hatred toward another group that their mind closes shut like a bear trap.

If you're looking for hatred look at the history of your religion. Or even present day. You won't have to look far.

I have no religion but yes throughout the ages religion has played a major part in the violence and hatred of the world...but so has love, property, greed, money!

Muslim Man Kills Daughter For Not Wearing Hijab

Really? Still?

Many people subscribe to an "I'm ok, you're ok" worldview. Few realize how dangerous that mindset really is.

I, for one, do not think the story reflected above is "ok." And before someone says, "that was an isolated incident," well, perhaps for the western culture. Unfortunately, in some parts of the world, that kind of thing happens every day.

I don't think the problem for me is, is there or isn't there a god. I think the idea of a God is a good idea, it brings many people hope and fulfillment, but no matter what claims they make of holiness religious leaders are still men and they use religion to justify terrible things and extort money. I'm agnostic, btw.

So good in theory, ruined in practice.

Your right...I didn't mean to come across the way you think. I do not approve of any violence brought forth from religion. Once you start killing, beheading etc. in the name of religion I say bring in the B1s and take care of some business.

<---- Agnostic

.... and enough talking about which religion is right. There is no right or wrong. You won't get any conclusion discussing this. You will know all the truth in the afterlife.... mmkay....

It's not that simple. If it was just about a benign idea of what happens to us when we die...that's one thing. We might not all agree.. but who cares, right? The problem becomes when religion trys to work it's way into government, psychology, social norms, law...etc that's when it becomes dangerous. And it happens every day, everywhere, even in this great nation of the seperation of church and state.

I read a bumpersticker one time that said "Get your rosaries off my ovaries!" Obviously that was just about abortion. But I think the larger message is how religion has been able to control people for thousands of years and how terribly oppressive that can be.

The lower one, actually.

Damn, C&H is the best comic strip I have ever read.

Err...

Logic 101?

Employees having "religious beliefs" does not make an organization religious.
Like... your bank will probably have a few hundred Muslims working for it across the country.. that does not make it a Muslim organization.
(or christian, or hindu, or buddhist, or....)

Christians > Atheists > Agnostics

yes, agnostics are the most pathetic, if God does exist then they still go to hell with the atheists.

Jesus Christ ftw.

I find myself compelled to pray you're being sarcastic.

Duh, most people in the world are religious, so your personal observation is going to reflect normal sampling in the population. Great argument.

Awesome example of the arrogance and hypocrisy of so many so-called "religious" people.

The point to that exact post was that the organizations that the lady mentioned were not "atheist" organizations but rather secular with members belonging to all sorts of religions.

I threw in the point that the various churches and religions are the foundation of our charity system..which is a fact.
