Atheists

You make a LOT of assumptions in this post.

Since all scientists don't agree about the Big Bang theory, you want to throw out Evolution as well? What about gravity? Scientists disagree on the exact mechanism of gravity as well. That doesn't mean you can just fucking float away if you are sincere in your anti-gravity theory. Are you a complete moron, or just a troll?

Uh, who are you to lump together atheists and make broad judgments about what all atheists believe in? Have you interviewed them all? Do you have some sampling, statistics to back up what you are saying? And you want to say some people (atheists) are close-minded? I think you need to look at the fucking 2x4 in your eye.

Science doesn't verify any aspect of intelligent design.

I also try not to pigeonhole myself with atheist or agnostic. As a learning, growing human being, my personal philosophy has evolved throughout my life. Do I think there are a lot of things unexplained by science? Sure. Could there be a powerful entity out there? I'm not sure, but it sure as hell wouldn't be some overbearing being demanding burnt entrails and abstinence from pork products. And if he WANTED my worship, he wouldn't be WORTHY of it.

Uh...you are clearly emotionally attached to this issue with the name calling and expletives. Sad that some people can not discuss interesting issues in a civilized manner. It's funny how "hardcore" atheists and "die hard" religious fanatics, always come off sounding the same.

Further, I made no direct comments towards anyone in general but you clearly took it quite personally...

At any rate, I'll just wish you and your family a great holiday season and a prosperous new year.

There is no hell.

Even if there were, I'm fine going there. Much rather be there than with an arrogant hateful god that would send them there for something so stupid as a "not allowing jesus in your heart"

I'll hang out with homo's, Heaven wouldn't be much fun without them anyway.

You guys are fighting over metaphysics. This is a field beyond any verifiable experience. All metaphysical "knowledge" is just some douchebag talking out of his ass. And here you are FIGHTING over who is right?

There's a special term used in psychology for this:

retarded.

I'm a very empathetic person, and it pisses me off that decent people are duped into believing this religious crap. These poor saps are going to live their life according to someone else's artificially imposed rules instead of developing their own belief system and answers to life's questions.

It's like seeing dogs that were abused and are skittish or excessively violent. You think, "How sad, if only they had been treated right."

My apologies for getting a bit heated.

Most people are happier living with their religion. They have something to turn to in times of need and despair. Most of the times it pushes individuals to something greater than themselves, to extend a helping hand to those in need. Even if the atheist are right..the religious person will never know this. Their death will come to them a little easier believing in a life beyond this.

I have more respect for those (of any peaceful religion) that faithfully practice their religion over the "if it feels good do it" atheist.

The Big Bang Theory

Some scientist are claiming that new evidence concerning the Big Bang Theory (namely the slowing of the expansion of the Universe) prove that their had to be a supernatural start to the Universe.

On a different note, I think we have to let go of taking what the Bible says literally and look to it more as a metaphor where less learned people tried to explain what is known now:

Example: in the beginning was light (the bible)

In the beginning there was Energy = mass* speed of light^2 is what science says

....things that are made come from things that do not appear (Bible)

Energy = nonphysical
Matter = physical

See chart in post #14.

Heh. Sorry, I'm in the mood to stir the pot a little.

So am I:

I just laughed so hard at that one.

.......
The big "secret" though is that everyone is looking for it outside of us and it buried itself in our mind - that 98% of the brain that most of us don't use.
.....

As a psychologist, I love it when people spout that nonsense.
Well, for SOME people this might be true (creationists come to mind), but modern imaging methodologies show clearly and without a trace of doubt that 100% of the brain are used. (Not at the same time, tho)
The human brain is not sitting around idling on religious thought or frolicking in spiritual dimensions.

I think it is far more interesting how people waste so much time arguing with people who they don't believe a word of what they say exists.

How much time do I waste heckling flat-earth folks, cat-lovers, or romanians?

None, because they are dead to me... If you don't believe in what those bible -thumpers are saying then shut the f up. Addressing a creationist argument doesn't make them look any dumber than it makes you look smart

Actually, I would not care if they left the rest of the populace alone (seperation of church and state and all that, ya know?)

As they are actively trying to change laws, get into school curriculums, etc.. all over the world, I do care.

I think you should read this if you have time, it's common ground of Christians and atheists:

10 Things Christians and Atheists Can (And Must) Agree On | Cracked.com

It's pretty long, I didn't even read all of it, you could skip the intro and just read the points if you would like.

WTF? It's the atheists that removed religion from school. You can't complain worth shit, your side is winning just because it claims to be the neutral side, when actually it's just another philosophy (religion/faith, whatever) with no spiritual grounds.

The secular state (separation of church and state) has brought us modern society.
Else we would have stonings, whippings, witch trials, etc...

This is what is still going on in Muslim societies.

And no, atheism is no religion, nor is it a faith. It is the absence of a faith in any god.

"If you don't believe in God, you must believe in something or someone else. An atheist doesn't simply lack positive belief in God. The atheist has positive belief in the non-existence of God."

"The Religion of Atheism is for the totally unrational person, which is why Atheists account for less that 10% of the population. There are Ulterior Motives to Atheism, namely : Admitting the obvious of an INtelligent Creator introduces accountability and someone who is bigger and more important than oneself ...and, it impedes on the present less than desirable and/or immoral (incl. sexually, in most cases) lifestyle that the Atheist has chosen for himself. Both of these can be summarized by Pride."

Oh, BTW..

I am a scientist. Maybe humanist.
Bring me scientific proof God exists, and I would accept it (after questioning the shit out of the supporting data, the theory, the methodology, as good scientists do). Alas... it has not happened yet.

I did read the article and here is my take on them:

1. You Can Do Terrible Things in the Name of Either One

As our society still stands (as does Norway), I do not think that atheists are evil people. Humanism seems to be a very good ethical philosophy, I am currently looking into it.

What I do NOT AGREE on is that I can do anything terrible "in the name of" atheism. Yes, in the absence of any god or deity I could adopt another philosophy such as nihilism, communism, capitalism, or the like, but I will not be able to justify it with atheism.
"I shall kill you in the name of..err..in the name of... well... err..you got me there... " just doesn't work, ya know... it has no ring to it.

You gotta look for another scapegoat.

On the other hand.....

2. Both Sides Really Do Believe What They're Saying

For me, NOT believing in a god does not take belief. Nice thing about science - no belief necessary.

3. In Everyday Life, You're Not That Different

Yes.

4. There Are Good People on Both Sides

Yes.

5. Your Point of View is Legitimately Offensive to Them

Maybe. I would actually disagree on the "legitimate" part, but yes.

Please...

On topics such as these, please do not refer to a priest of your religion.

Nope.

A hypothesis is rather an educated guess.

A theory is a way to explain all the empirical data.
If another scientist can find a flaw or data that your theory can not explain, the theory is canceled, nulled, dead and another will take its place.

This is what non-scientists often do not understand.

EVERYTHING in science is debatable, falsifiable, subject of scrutiny. That is how it moves forward.
