Google instant search...wtf?

This kind of scares me. Judging by the behavior of some of the less "computer educated" people I watch using google, they tend to type a word or two (sometimes just several letters) then tilt their heads up and look at the screen and check their typing. I'd find it safe to assume that if google is already suggesting results by this point they are pretty likely to get distracted and just start clicking.

ding ding ding ding ding - the "ooh shiny" effect.

Doesn't matter if you are signed into Google or not -- your search is still customized based on your past search history based on a cookie Google uses.

yeah, this upgrade will definitely be tough to digest for those who have been optimizing for the long-tail keywords...

I am actually watching the video of the Launch that is 1.5 hours long.

Some searches are pretty neat like hitting "W" brings up the weather in the city you are in, one character, no return key....

It brings up Wal-Mart for me. "We" brings up weather.

It's funny because I've never searched for Wal-Mart.

So how long before they decide this isn't the best way to display the most relevant results and shit can the entire thing?

probably never. this looks like a permanent change. HTML 5 & dynamic JS are hot right now and are the future of the web. they are able to load pages instantly by automatically pre-caching all of the possible searches while you are typing. pretty badass if you ask me!

I wonder if at that exact moment an old person is thinking I hate Fat people?

i hate to say it, but i kind of like it as a searcher. But, As an advertiser, im not so sure.

someone always manages to thrive where others think its the end of the world.

keep that in mind and try to be that person who thrives and you welcome any change :)

its irritating to have to change whats been working, but its also an opportunity to make improvements and gain an edge against everyone else

Do you have to be logged in? I don't see it.

Google

Surprisingly, so far my Adwords CTR's are still the same - although I'm not using many long tail kw's.

From a search stand point it's actually pretty sweet, as an advertiser I don't think it's the end of the world - if it's gonna hurt our spending, it'll hurt Google and they'll switch it back.

Plus if you target super broad stuff you can probably get a higher CTR as lots of impressions won't be counted (as users will continue searching) - it'll probably make Ad Headlines for important that they stand out though.

Google wat?

Google needs to focus on how much they are going to buy Facebook for and leave the search engine alone. They know they have the shiot when it comes to search engines. Facebook on the other hand is taken a huge chunk of the advertising change.

i have to agree about actually liking it from an end user standpoint - the new impression count metric is completely retarded though. Bear in mind this probably won't hugely affect your stats yet - you have to be logged in to google and in many cases actually opt-in to the changes - but once they roll out platform wide, shit'll hit the fan.

The most important consideration for marketers or anyone who creates content, however, is in the bullets...

"Smarter Predictions: Even when you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, predictions help guide your search. The top prediction is shown in grey text directly in the search box, so you can stop typing as soon as you see what you need."
Here's what this means: no two people will see the same web. Once a single search would do the trick - and everyone saw the same results. That's what made search engine optimization work. Now, with this, everyone is going to start tweaking their searches in real-time. The reason this is a game changer is feedback. When you get feedback, you change your behaviors.

Think about it. When you push a door and it doesn't open quickly, you push harder. When you try to drive a car up a hill and it doesn't go as fast as you would like, you step on the gas. Feedback changes your behavior.

Google Instant means no one will see the same web anymore, making optimizing it virtually impossible. Real-time feedback will change and personalize people's search behaviors.

::LATER: Google is saying expect traffic fluctuations around organic keywords.

I think this is pretty fly for a lot of reasons. Can be a menace though. But its fast as hell!
